Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.
Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)
One of my Fox colleagues recently sent me an email attachment of a painting of the framers signing the Constitution of the United States. Except in this version, George Washington who presided at the Constitutional Convention looks at James Madison who was the scrivener at the Convention and says, None of this counts if people get sick, right?
In these days of state governors issuing daily decrees purporting to criminalize the exercise of our personal freedoms, the words put into Washingtons mouth are only mildly amusing. Had Washington actually asked such a question, Madison, of all people, would likely have responded: No. This document protects our natural rights at all times and under all circumstances.
It is easy, 233 years later, to offer that hypothetical response, particularly since the Supreme Court has done so already when, as readers of this column will recall, Abraham Lincoln suspended the constitutionally guaranteed writ of habeas corpus the right to be brought before a judge upon arrest only to be rebuked by the Supreme Court.

Some areas are hit harder than others.
Plenty still going on around here.
Just what is it you would propose to do instead of what is being done? Do you still think this is a hoax?
I doubt you have anything useful to add.
Well, we partially agree. We hav edone a lot of damage for very little benefit that I can see. Half measures are not effective. The way we have done things we still have a problem and have created collateral damage. If we had done nothing we would still have a maybe bigger problem and still have maybe worse collateral damage in the long run.
I don’t see any good choices but the one we have not taken, a full effort instead of playing footsie.
The entire HCS is gearing up for this. If you are one of those HCS workers you listed you would know that and be at your post.
So make up what ever justification for your whining you like.
It’s a war.
“You cant fight germs by hiding from them, they will find you sooner or later, no matter what you do or dont do.”
The point is to slow down the inevitable spread of the infection to everyone, such that it minimizes the deaths and keeps the burden on the HCS low enough to prevent collapse.
A collapsed HCS will result in a sharp increase in mortality and, incidentally, crash the rest of the economy. Likewise, a crashed economy will result in a crashed HCS.
So keeping the HCS strong enough to deal with the pandemic and stimulating the economy enough to avoid collapse is a pretty good strategy, all things considered. Will it work forever? No. Is any of this ideal? No. Is everybody making sacrifices? Pretty much. It’s harder on some than on others. But so is being dead or having million dollar hospital bills.
War is hell. And for the first time in a long time, we’re fighting it on our own soil.
[[No one has a right to intentionally present a bio-threat to others.]]
And yet we’ve done so for centuries- flues have killed many many millions- people get the flu- go to work, infect soemoen else- they go home give it to their elderly sick folks and they die- been going on for centuries- but nooen ever suggested we lock everyone in their homes regardless of whether they have symptoms or not, or face arrest before this virus-
quarantining the SICK is one thing- As you say- noone has the right to —intentionally— infect’ others (Though the courts have argued gay people don’t have to inform their many many one night stand partners that they have aids now)- but what about the rest of society?
Are we to do this EVERY single flu season now because many 1000’s of people die every year from flu?
That is the question- You can make your same argument for Every flu- not just this virus- but the argument borders on giving up rights every flu season
[[If we insist on our Liberties The Grim Reaper will just keep on swinging.]]
The grim reaper is juts put on hold right now- as soon as people get back out into the public- there’s gonna be another wave of infections- we’re just delaying it-
Can we delay it long enough until they get a vaccine? You mentioned a ‘brief period’- but we can’t- vaccines take a long time to get out, and sheltering folks will only delay the inevitable when folks are let back out- all it will take are a few people walking around with the virus, not knowing they have it, to start this whole ball rolling again
[[I believe a dangerous epidemic is one of those things.]]
The problem is MV- All flues are dangerous- all flues kill upwards of 80,000 people just in this country alone- right now, we’re nowhere near that high mark- (however, that coudl very well change WHEN folks get back out into the public- peopel start vistittign their elderly folks in nursing homes again, people cram into jammed subways, etc etc etc- We will just have to wait and see how that is going to turn out)
So- do we do this every single flu season? Again- flu seasons were much more deadly in the past than this one is right now- (likely though it’s due to all the sheltering inplace- We’ll have to see what happens when the masses are released back into society)
[[Will this lead to loss of freedom?]]
If they do this every single flu season then yes, we’ve lost them permanently every flu season- and only have them temporarily during periods of no flu- When do we determine which flues need sheltering inplace? As mentioned, many 10’s of 1000’s die every year- Why is this virus any more severe than flues that kill 10’s of 1000’s?
[[2,000,000 potential deaths]]
??? Fuici is only saying 100,000- not much more than regular flues-
After that Chinese company went under because their vaccine turned out to be poison i think I will watch from the sidelines if a vaccine is offered. And I have had every vaccination you can think of, flu shot every year, etc. i am by NO means an antivaxxer.
[[Liberals were looking for a way to claim authority to move to communism. They found it: State of Emergency! Youre all going to die!!!]]
EXACTLY- that is the big fear- and how do the people fight it without a standing army of any kind? You’ll have a few folks who will defy orders- but they will arrested quietly behind the cameras- some might resist arrest- but it will be ineffective- because not enough folks will be willing to do it all at once to overwhelm those trying to enforce the new constitution violating laws-
of course, when enough people get fed up with the shelter inpalce orders- they might all start defying at once- but we’ll see-
[[You cant fight germs by hiding from them, they will find you sooner or later, no matter what you do or dont do.]]
EXACTLY- thank you for saying that- I’ve been saying that right along- We’re just delaying the inevitable- it’s just like having a flu in a home- if one person has it- no matter what the other folks try to do to prevent getting it too- eventually they will get it despite al the precautions- most likely- it’s just a matter of time- Very Very few families can avoid all gettign it if one is sick in the house- the virus cells are just too numerous, too small, and too hard to control
[[Now we know the incredible tyranny governors can impose]]
They are so drunk with power right now that they actually deny life saving drugs to victims- That is the height of power drunkenness
Unfortunately, during an epidemic hiding from the germs IS exactly how you fight it. And if you wait until you are horrified to start hiding from other people it just gets worse day by day. Londoners figured this stuff out in the 1600s. Whatever the Black Death was they finally realized you get it from other people.
What good are they if they are violated when we go to war?
Yeah that was a scary deal- I’ll get the vaccine but not if it comes from china UNLESS it’s proven safe first-
So I have to be tested to work? Sure, I’ll fall in line my fuhrer.
“Seriously, you think the people on this site are more concerned about fantasy ski trips and thats why we think youre full of shit? Really?”
Some are. One in particular specifically whined about their ski trip being cancelled. Many of the FluBros have made similar comments about this or that petty inconvenience. So, yeah, it makes all of them look selfish, narcissistic and spoiled. And that’s one of the reasons, along with solipsism, weapons-grade ODD and deliberate obtuseness that we think you’re full of shit. Really.
Shove it fear boy. Our rights ARE being trampled. Businesses closing because some arbitrary “order” by a mayor shuts them down as bureaucrats decide what is “essential”.
States banning you from taking a pet to a vet unless it’s an “emergency”. Who decides that? Cops arresting people for having a funeral. Can buy liquor but can’t get a haircut? What next, a “card” you show to a cop so you can drive? Appointments for grocery buying?
You panic over the flu and tell us constitutionist to calm down?
KMA
Hap9ens every year moron. It’s called influenza and it kills tens of thousands.
Yourre a blithering idiot. Work is freedom of assembly and free association under the Constitution.
