Alone Again, Naturally by Gilbert O’ Sullivan is the most depressing song ever written and will have you reaching for a razor blade.

To me, the song evokes happy memories. It was riding high on the charts when I reunited with my family after spending more than a year overseas.

The saddest and most depressing song ever written is Little Mother, a hit late in the summer of 1928 by Vaughn De Leath, the First Lady of Radio. The song is so sad that the singer can barely get through it without breaking down.

Well, I went to the bank to get some money out, to go eat somewhere, and see a show, or something, but the bank was closed, due to CV-19.   It doesn't matter, though, cause all the restaurants are closed here too, as are the movie theaters, and all live entertainment here has also been cancelled.

I'll see your "Without You" and raise you "Gloomy Sunday", aka the "Hungarian Suicide Song." Although it is arguably the most depressing popular song ever recorded, it was, nonetheless, a global hit, done by many groups in numerous languages, in 1936.

Rezső Seress, who wrote the song, later committed suicide.

Just listened to it yesterday! Got sidetracked sending “Hey, Paddy...” to an Irish friend.

But it seems more of a breakup song than a lonely song, a happy-to-be-without-you thing. Second favorite breakup song is Pat’s Yipes song “Last of the Angry Young Men”. Best is Peter Himmelman’s “Midnight Walk in the Ruins”!
