California Governor Closes All Bars, Cuts Restaurant Capacities to Stop Coronavirus

In a press conference held on Sunday afternoon, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that all restaurants will have their occupancy levels cut in half and all bars will be closed to stop the coronavirus spread.

Newsom made the first announcement that all bars, night clubs, wineries and brew pubs are non-essential locations and will shut down. The Governor then stated that restaurants are a more “nuanced” issue and that the state doesn’t believe they require a total closure at this time. However, all restaurants’ occupancy levels will be cut in half, and patrons will be required to socially distance themselves in dining areas.

This message comes days after the governor banned all gatherings in California over 250 people. That being said, the governor did not address the closing of movie theaters in this announcement.

During the conference, Newsom said that 335 people have tested positive for coronavirus in California. The new tally of positive tests marks a 14 percent increase from yesterday. There have been six deaths from the virus in the state, with the sixth taking place in San Mateo county, where 32 cases have been recorded.

The announcement comes two days after President Trump declared a national state of emergency over the coronavirus pandemic and the U.S. travel ban was extended to include the U.K. and Ireland. The North American box office took a brutal hit this weekend after several theater chains limited their capacity to allow for social distancing. Overall, the box office hit a 22-year low point.

On Saturday, France also took precautions to limit the spread of coronavirus. The country closed all movie theaters, restaurants and non-essential stores. Places like pharmacies, grocery stores, gas stations, banks and newspaper stands still remain open.

I recall reading somewhere it is six feet. Trying to find the source online for the six feet.

No more than 35 people in one place.

I didn’t hear his news conference and I agree there is hysteria and overreaction, but states have far broader “police powers” than the federal government does. I think these actions are plainly permissible under California law.

is that like a helicopter ride sponsored by Augusto Pinochet?
...or was it someone else who offered the chopper rides?

That was more likely Jorge Rafael Videla of Argentina. Pinochet was a benevolent dictator.

California’s a massive state with 36,000,000 people in it. Shouldn’t each county get to decide what to do depending on its COVID case load?

These are pretty Draconian measures to be taking in a Constitutional Republic. There should be some court cases by the end of the week from business owners seeking relief.

Not being a lawyer I don’t know on what legal grounds these actions are being ordered.

My gut feeling is that the American people will put up with it for awhile but at some point they are going to want to get on with their lives.

A majority of Americans do not have any savings. They will not be able to go for weeks without a paycheck.

Hang on it is going to be a bumpy ride.

This may or may not be a good public health move, but how in the world can the government just shut down businesses. Again, we seem to be moving towards martial law.

Further, it appears that in Democrat strongholds that they are taking rapid extraordinary steps to impose the heavy hand of government cloaked in a manner of “caring and trying to keep people safe.” I wonder how difficult or how long it will take for these fascist wannabes to surrender their new hold over the populace.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that the decisions make any sense and aren’t lunacy.

Plus no events with over 25 attendees, which one-ups the Illinois governor’s edict barring events with over 100.

We have a ‘village’ in the harbor. Usually bustling on Sundays rain or shine. I went down to the Mexican restaurant for a margarita and burrito. Me and an old man only 2 in the place. We both sat at the bar.

Ohio just closed all dine-in bars and restaurants. You can still drive through or carry out. I don’t know how the drive through bars will work.

The unemployment rate will be skyrocketing soon. Democrat governors are creating a recession/depression that will get any Democrat elected.
