Frame it another way. Lots of FR are over 60, many over 75. Wait until a few get sick or their their spouses and siblings get sick, maybe even start dying. Lets see if people are willing to dismiss it then or criticize any discussion about it.
You are falling into a very well designed trap. 5000 deaths is a statistic, but if I can get you to talk about one name with one face, it is now a tragedy with impact. We must separate the statistical epidemiology from the case by case emotional heart strings. I see ARDS every day both prior to Sars2-CoVID19 and will likely see cases, both explained and unexplained after this outbreak.
When I have a death, it is a tragedy as I sit with the family, and try in some way to help them understand what has happened. So, it is the last bastion of the hand wringers to point out — at SOMEPOINT you will know someone this affects. This is true, but at some point you will also know someone influenza, cancer, heart disease, and numerous other diseases affects, and yet you do not seem to ring the alarm bell about those. Is this a double standard? Indifference? Or the power of knowledge of those diseases?
So? I am 65 with cancer and I understand I can get it, so what? Is the entire nation suppose to come to a standstill? How weak willed do you think we are!
I’m past 60. If I die, I die. I’m more likely to die from a car crash than from this damn virus. I spent too many years strapping into an ejection seat to panic now.
If someone believes they are at high risk and needs to be more careful, have at it. Entirely reasonable for the really old and/or those with genuine lung or heart issues.
But shutting down the country? The only reason I accept it at all is that I trust Trump’s judgment. But....I think we’re going nuts over a genuine but acceptable danger.
“Wait until a few get sick”...
Why, if this thing is so deadly, do we HAVE to wait? It had all the time in the world to, as they say, go viral. Even when people became aware the first thing they did was run to packed stores buying up everything in sight.
The current reaction is what you’d expect with tens of thousands dead and many more sick.
