Masters ticket prices plummet in wake of coronavirus

For over eight decades sports fans have dreamt of attending the Masters, golf’s best event held on the sport’s most exclusive grounds, Augusta National in Georgia.

Amen Corner. Blooming azaleas. Towering loblolly pines. Pimento cheese sandwiches. Witnessing Tiger Woods march up the hill on No. 18, the way Hogan, Arnie and Jack once did.

This is golfing heaven.

The problem is getting in. You either need to know someone, get lucky in the low-odds ticket lottery or hit the overheated secondary market where a one-day badge routinely soars over $2,000 and sometimes $3,000.

Well, welcome to 2020 and what could be called the Coronavirus Sale.

According to research done by TicketIQ.com, the average asking price of a badge for a Thursday opening round was $3,616 in 2016, $3,211 in 2017 and a whopping $4,475 in 2018.

A chance for golf fans to do a bucket list item is you do not mind a non-zero chance of ending up in the bucket.

In the late ‘80’s and early ‘90’s, eight of us from work would go to Persimmon Hill Golf Club in South Carolina and play on the Saturday and Sunday before the Masters...On Monday, we would drive about 30 miles to Augusta and attend the first practice round...You could get in for $10 on Monday and $20 on Tuesday...

In my opinion, that was more fun than a real round because the players would chat with you and were very friendly because it was practice...

I saw Bernhard Langer give away a dozen new Titleist balls on the putting green by putting them at little kids and saying the ball wasn’t any good, just keep it...LOL

Mwe should start a thread of all the things that are usually too expensive to go to that people who are willing to take the risk can go to now. :)

if they cut phantom of the Opera tickets in half for orchestra I’ll go see it again

LOL You must have been playing right in front of me. :-)

Those were fun times. I used to go to ALL of the practice rounds.

Last year, I was lucky enough to get to go to the Thur/Friday rounds. It was the first time I ever attended the actual tournament. I can now confirm, it is MORE FUN to go to the practice rounds.

Kentucky Derby ticket prices in the re-sale market are way down.

I didn’t even think about the resale market for things. That’s a good place to start. Thanks

Me too! Would be about the 5th time. It’s still enjoyable even if Michael Crawford is no longer Phantom. I saw it with him 3 times!

A close friend of mine had tickets to Walt Disney World 2 weeks after 911.
They had the entire park to themselves.

It actually would be my fifth time too :-) twice with my niece and with two different girls. I wanted to do it with my niece again :-)

it’s the only musical I saw that I really like. I like Opera, some of them, also.

I must admit I never knew who was playing the roles. I just absolutely loved it.

I'm a long time NFL season ticket holder … typically I'll go to two or three home games each season … I live 250 miles from the stadium. I put my tickets up for sale on Ticketmaster, sometimes Stub-Hub, for games I'm not planning to attend and have some degree of success selling them. Some years I do fairly well and make money on my tickets, other years break even or like last season lose money. Even when I lose money a good portion of the season ticket price for the upcoming season is in the bank. Understand the first installment (half the season ticket price) is due in March. The second early June. A couple of seasons back I came close to giving up my tickets because of the Kaepernick BS this year I may pull the trigger and not renew. My thinking this Coronavirus thing in time will dissipate but there will be a ripple effect for some time after … meaning NFL tickets are going to take a tremendous hit this fall. Many stadiums will be half full at best … even teams that sell out season after season.

I have several friends who had Detroit Lions season tickets for years but stopped buying them since they got sick of watching them lose year after year.....

Michael Crawford was THE Phantom. He was the original and the best.

It's a song lyric.

I actually saw Van Halen in Augusta, once upon a time.
