Kenya's rare white female giraffe 'killed by poachers'

Kenya’s only female white giraffe and her calf have been killed by poachers, conservationists have said, in a major blow to conservation of the rare animals found nowhere else in the world.

The bodies of the two giraffes were found “in a skeletal state after being killed by armed poachers” in Garissa in eastern Kenya, the Ishaqbini Hirola Community Conservancy said in a statement.

Their deaths leave one surviving white giraffe – a lone male borne by the same slaughtered female, the conservancy said.

“We are the only community in the world who are custodians of the white giraffe,” said Mohammed Ahmednoor, the manager of the conservancy.

“Its killing is a blow to tremendous steps taken by the community to conserve rare and unique species, and a wakeup call for continued support to conservation efforts.”

The white giraffe stirred huge interest in 2017 when she was first spotted on the conservancy and again when she birthed two calves, the latest in August last year.

I worked with a young man from Kenya several years ago; very nice Christian young man. He said when he takes a trip back home every few years, he and his dad always go hunting. He told me they hunt any thing that moves -— giraffe, lions, wild dogs, etc. Anything. Everyone there does. And they eat what they kill. I realize there are poachers who will kill an animal just for one small part of it, but the average guy kills to eat, and is not concerned with “special” animals. Meat is meat.

These reserves are often huge areas, sometimes more than one contingent to another or more. It’s impossible for the caretakers to monitor everything all the time.

Do they kill the babies, too....

or just not give a sh!t that the mother has one.

Do they think some part of the giraffe will increase sexual prowess or cure cancer?

I hate these people. They slaughter rhinos just because they think the horn has some magical properties.... or at least that’s how they can sell it.

I was wondering about that. What part of a giraffe is there to poach?

So you think these giraffes were killed for meat only? Isn’t it pretty risky to go to this place just for meat? It sounds like some sort of prohibited reserve or something, but I guess I don’t really know what exactly a conservancy is. Is it just so huge they can’t really prohibit meat poaching or what?

Back in 1980, I stopped at a million acre ranch owned by a Texan. He had very good fences (”Elefence”) and a private game warden force. As a result, he had more rhino and elephants than his land would support.

He offered to give these excess endangered animals to the Kenya Wildlife Service. They declined to take these rhino & elepheants, saying “We could not keep them alive.”

We need more of this...

Late on July 3rd(2018), the weapons and body parts of three alleged would-be rhino poachers were found in Sibuya, a South African game reserve. It appears that they were eaten by a pride of lions, according to local reports.

Reportedly, dogs in an anti-poaching unit reacted to something unusual on an early-morning patrol on Monday, but it wasn’t until Tuesday afternoon that a skull was seen in the lions’ camp. That’s when reserve owner Nick Fox went out with an anti-poaching unit to investigate.

There, they saw supplies—bags, guns, and bread—scattered everywhere. “Human remains were also clearly visible,” Fox told South African news outlet HeraldLIVE. It was too dark on Tuesday evening to safely investigate further, so on Wednesday the unit returned and tranquilized the lions so that they could comb the scene. (Read about the women fighting poaching in South Africa.)

Fox and others found that only a skull and a few pieces of pelvic bone remained of the people who were apparently mauled. They believe that there were three men because they found three pairs of shoes and gloves. The gear gathered from around the lions’ camp provides evidence of illegal intent, Fox’s team said.

“They were armed with, amongst other things, a high-powered rifle with a silencer, an axe, wire cutters, and had food supplies for a number of days—all the hallmarks of a gang intent on killing rhino and removing their horns,” Fox told local outlet RNEWS. Helicopters have been called in to scan the thick bush for survivors who may be hiding. (Also see: “Why Did Lion Kill Tourist in South Africa?”)

South Africa and its influences, like Zimbabwe and Botswana, take their game protection very seriously. Other countries farther north, including Kenya, are either underequipped to do a decent job or are simply too corrupt to care.

How do they know the remains were those of the white giraffes? Some kind of markers?
