Probably talking about the screenplay that was based on the original. The movie took licenses with the story.

I recall sitting in my bedroom reading that very book.
Jack London’s book.
I got it from the neighborhood library.

“What happened to Jack London?” Anytime Hollywood says “based on” they have pretty much altered the story line to fit their agenda. In the movie, Thorton (Harrison Ford), who is living alone with the dog in the wilds, is killed by a crazed, rich, white guy. In Jack London's original version, Thorton is living in a gold mining camp with others who are all massacred by Indians.
