The 50 best reasons to live in New Jersey
The Star Ledger ^ | 02.15.20 | Peter Genovese

Posted on 02/18/2020 6:49:19 PM PST by Coleus

There are about 9 million of us living here, and we all can’t be delusional.

Apart from those who live here primarily because of job or family, most New Jerseyans live here because they like it here! New York City is a quick PATH or train ride away — why live there?

The Shore, the Pine Barrens, beautiful countryside, diners, beaches, the nation’s most diverse city, small towns, great scenic highways — does any state pack as much variety into one compact package as New Jersey? Nope.

Here are the 50 best reasons to live in New Jersey, from someone who was born here (Trenton) and has travelled endlessly to every part of the state. This list could have easily included 100 or more items.

What are your favorite reasons to live here? Let us know in the comments section. The list is not ranked. Roadside farm stands

Forget that store-bought, grown-in-California, -Mexico, -Peru or wherever produce. Nothing beats a tomato, peach or other fruit or vegetable from a Jersey roadside stand. Scores of family-run stands dot the landscape, and there are an additional 144 community farmers markets in towns across the state. N.J. ranks third nationally in cranberry production, fourth in tomatoes, bell peppers, peaches and cucumbers (cukes? who knew?) and sixth in blueberries. We’re not called the Garden State for nothing.

I lived there for 16 years. Not sure whether lived is the appropriate verb.

The stench when entering the garden state from New York is enough to turn your stomach. Pay me to live there and I would turn it down. All those vegetables are available in roadside stands and markets anyway. Live there for a statistic? No thank you.

Well, Eli Manning lives there.

Other than that, I can’t think of a compelling reason.

The taxes and gun laws?

You just voided all 50 of the other reasons. BAM!

You could probably hunt humans in Camden and no one would notice.

That might be attractive to elites.

The state has a well-deserved awful reputation, but if you travel within a radius of 15 miles of this place you'll come across some of the prettiest places you'll find in North America:

New Jersey has many friendly social organizations. That’s a plus, I guess.

I once asked a New Yorker why you only have to pay tolls when entering New York City and not when leaving.

He told me the tolls are there because so many people want to get out of New Jersey.

NJ actually is a great place, and it’s much more than NYC urban sprawl.

The south and central are often very charming. I found many outdoor table restaurants in Various towns in the ‘90s where I’d not seen them really before. Great RevWar history which brought me there as well as work at the time (occasional trips to contractors there).

I also have a soft spot for it as the birthplace of my beloved wonder dog, decades ago, in the same town as Lindbergh lived.

Worst about NJ? Jug-handle turns. Hands down.

The worst thing
