The 50 best reasons to live in New Jersey
The Star Ledger ^ | 02.15.20 | Peter Genovese

Posted on 02/18/2020 6:49:19 PM PST by Coleus

There are about 9 million of us living here, and we all can’t be delusional.

Apart from those who live here primarily because of job or family, most New Jerseyans live here because they like it here! New York City is a quick PATH or train ride away — why live there?

The Shore, the Pine Barrens, beautiful countryside, diners, beaches, the nation’s most diverse city, small towns, great scenic highways — does any state pack as much variety into one compact package as New Jersey? Nope.

Here are the 50 best reasons to live in New Jersey, from someone who was born here (Trenton) and has travelled endlessly to every part of the state. This list could have easily included 100 or more items.

What are your favorite reasons to live here? Let us know in the comments section. The list is not ranked. Roadside farm stands

Forget that store-bought, grown-in-California, -Mexico, -Peru or wherever produce. Nothing beats a tomato, peach or other fruit or vegetable from a Jersey roadside stand. Scores of family-run stands dot the landscape, and there are an additional 144 community farmers markets in towns across the state. N.J. ranks third nationally in cranberry production, fourth in tomatoes, bell peppers, peaches and cucumbers (cukes? who knew?) and sixth in blueberries. We’re not called the Garden State for nothing.

I spent a couple days in New Jersey, across from New York City. Went on the train to a place 20 miles away.

Anything in NJ around NYC is not worth seeing. Further away, it gets better.

Terrible state for taxes and crime.

Ate a meal at an apparent crime lord pub. Everyone thought I was a Fed and kept asking me questions about why I was there.

They prided themselves on never having a computer or even a credit card processing machine. Cash only establishment. Looked as beat up and unkempt as an 1800s saloon in old western movies.

Thankfully, it was daytime, but for their whole hour, I was their only client.

Strange occasion to be one man dealing with those four men. Wanted to know everything about my family, where I grew up, why I was there—even what hotel I was staying at and where I planned to eat that night.

Its the taxes, not the full serv gas. Before Gov. Ice Cream Cone decided to raise the gas tax, our gasoline tax was the second lowest in the nation, Alaska being the lowest and out of the lower 48, our gas was generally the cheapest in the nation. Low Gas tax, plus the refineries/distribution for the north east goes through NJ gave us incredibly low gas prices for decades. And that was with full serv gas

New York Style pizza....the best....

also, I've talked to New Jersey natives who have lived out west here, where I am now, and all they can talk about is how good the Jersey tomatoes were......and they're right...

What is wrong with making a right turn to make a left turn?

It isn’t that hard

And traffic circles are easy, just step on the gas and pray you don’t hit anybody, its the jersey way.

Used to be a old sign back in the 90’s on route 78 coming in from PA, “Welcome to New Jersey, now go home”

It’s both. Someone has to pay those people to pump gas.

Again ... the price at the pump would be even less if those salaries did not have to be paid.

I remember thinking some mob deal must have foisted this upon NJ.

You are basically correct

I agree with that, but full serv wasn’t the reason our gas prices went up, it was just taxes.

We had full serv since 1949

Good grief — they have mandated full serv since 1949? I had no idea.

I was picking on this one thing but I realize it is least of people’s worries in NJ given all the other taxes, property taxes, etc. :-)

You’re probably right that gasoline is a little lower down south. I’m thinking of prices in nearby NE states. For example, for many years, PA’s prices were higher because, believe it or not, NJ gasoline tax was lower. Right now, gasoline prices around here are about $2.30/gallon, still lower than PA.

I don’t think the state subsidizes gasoline prices here. At least I never heard of that before. The taxes were just lower. They tax us to death on everything else, though. :-(

Haha. I don’t mind the traffic circles. I hate the jug handles because they’re not consistent.

You’re driving along a road where every left turn is in the left lane. Suddenly, the left turn you have to make is in the right lane, so you either push your way into right lane traffic or miss your turn and have to make a U-turn to go back. Arrrgh.

I’ve been preparing myself for over a decade for this thread. It’s time to shine now and I’m all choked up - I’m overwhelmed with responses.

Your post about the Canadian Bacon for retards simply sums it up. It’s sublime, it works on different levels. It’s honest. It’s like calling the sky blue.

New Jersey and it’s inhabitants are the worst. And I know I’ll catch flak for it because for some reason god has smeared these cretins over the map with a giant butter knife. New Jerseyites are everywhere. Literally, everywhere. When spelunkers explore the deepest caves they are greeted by a new jerseyite at the end holding a flashlight declaring second that they were there first, only after first introducing themselves as being from New Jersey.

As a Pennsylvanian native I can’t speak lowly enough of this vermin. Philly is philly because it’s now part of Jersey. And for everyone of them claiming that they left because of the state and it’s politics hold that state and it’s politics close to their heart.

Seriously, new jersey is a vex upon the American landscape. And I still hold to it, my mind is still swirling with hundreds of reasons why NJ and those who hail from it are the worst.

Start flaming, suckers. I don’t care. I simply don’t care what you have to say.

I’m still not relieved of my disdain.

For me, it’s living 8 minutes from Manhattan at a considerably lower price!
