VIDEO: Nick Markakis Calls for Astros Players to Catch a 'Beating' for Sign-Stealing Scandal

Go ahead and add Atlanta Braves right fielder Nick Markakis to the long list of players who is furious with the Houston Astros right now. The team's sign-stealing scandal has turned Major League Baseball upside down, with each passing day only bringing more shame to Houston. For Markakis, he truly sounded like a disappointed parent while calling out the Astros.

That's the voice of a man who is straight-up not happy with what happened, as well as how Rob Manfred has decided to handle the fallout of the ordeal.

"It angers you, especially coming from a guy who's played the right way his whole career," Markakis said. "No shortcuts. I know how hard this game is and I know how hard preparing for this game is. To see something like that, it's damaging to baseball. I feel like every single guy over there needs a beating. It's wrong. They're messing with people's careers."

Tell us how you really feel, Nick. The Astros players need a beating, you say? Whoa.

“I’m angry! It’s wrong. I’ve played my whole career clean and the right way. I’m hurt by it. And I’m disappointed with the way things have been handled by #MLB. Those guys still get to play. It’s Bull&$!t!” - Nick Markakis on addressing the #Astros Scandal

While Astros fans might try and defend their club, there's no denying what they've done over the years has been shameful.

Markakis is spot on. Career's have surely been affected by the sign-stealing, and he has every right to be as furious as he is now.

The Astros need the Kennesaw Mountain solution. Manfred is spouting about respecting precedent. Respect the Black Sox ruling - ban them all from baseball. Shoeless Joe did less and got banned.

He’s in the wrong sport for that. He should try hockey.

There’ll be some high and hard inside fastballs against the Astros early in the season. The umps will crackdown and the Astros will cry victim.

The Astros were cheating.
Every single person associated with the team was aware of it.
They all knew they were cheating, every man Jack of them.
They got caught, but when the cheating was exposed, all they got
was a trivial slap on the wrist by Major League Baseball.
Commissioner Rob Manfred (@11 million$/year) needs to be replaced.
All that takes is a majority vote by the owners.

Watching the World Series, I remember being so impressed by the clutch hitting of Carlos Beltran.

Little did I know what a FAKE he was.

Manfred gave immunity to those that came forward. I’m not sure he’s going to last a week.

Only impressed at his home game appearances?

You're either thinking of somebody else, or you're not referring to the 2017 World Series. Beltran went 0-3 in three games in the 2017 Series.

But somehow betting on your own team to win is worse than actually cheating at the game. Sorry. No sale.

I agree. They should also have their World Series victory zeroed-out. It’s argued that you can’t just give it to the other team, it’s a crap way to win it. OK, so don’t. Treat it like a year that the players were on strike, just nullify it. Put a dash across win/loss columns of the record books for the 2017 World Series. For the Astros, assign them a 0-162 record and roll back all team and player stats for regular and post-season. The Astros should also have to turn in their World Series rings with a lifetime ban and huge fine for anybody that refuses. If I were commissioner-for-a-day, the only purpose of the 2017 Astros’ season would be to serve as a warning to others.

He belongs to the union that would fight tooth and nail for the Astros players! It’s not all on MLB, the MLBPA is a huge part of why the Astro players got no punishment and Markakis belongs to that union. Which never made sense to me, because pitchers are part of the union too and they are the ones that had their stats, $$$ and careers affected by the cheatin ‘stros.

I keep thinking...how hard would it have been for other teams...pitchers and catchers...to change the signs between innings?

Thus, if a hitter gets the "word" that a fastball is coming when in fact it is now a curveball, would that be the way to combat the sign stealing?

I mean, the pitchers hold their gloves over their mouths during mound meetings to combat the efforts of all those Major Leaguers who can read lips.

You actually believe he only bet to win?! After all his other lies you actually think he drew a line at ALL?! Dude. Meanwhile yes it is. That’s the only rule in the sport that’s listed as lifetime ban on the first offense. Rule posted next to the phone Pete used to break the rule. He knew the penalty, he did it anyway, too bad so sad.

I also don’t think it’s worse than what went down during the steroid-era. Barry Bonds is a member in good standing but Pete Rose isn’t? There’s something really wrong with that.

I think opposing teams should have “Garbage Can Night” when the Astros come to town.

The Nationals did that very think in the 2019 World Series and won all the games in Houston.

Just how dumb are catchers and pitchers? It is down to stubbornness, laziness or dumbness that all catcher’s signs don’t have changing pre-decided indicators that change the signs or the sign order with today’s technology. You base it on inning number or the score or number of outs or anything else that changes as the game progresses. It would completely foil any sort of sign stealing, legitimate or via technological device.
