Remember Pearl Harbor became the battle cry. I was 8 years old when the Japs attacked Pearl Harbor and within 4 or 5 months my two older brothers had been drafted and a sister soon joined the WACs
I never buy millet. Messy, wasteful and bring in the unwanted gird species!
Mainly I do black oil sunflower seed mixed with shelled and whole peanuts and maybe some dried fruit pieces if I’m ‘rich’ that month, LOL!
And homemade suet, but I have lots of access to animal fat/lard to use up. ;)
I buy a premium mix at Menards. It has oil and striped sunflower, safflower, nuts and a few other things I can’t think of right now. No millet. It’s pricey but I use my Menards rewards for bird seed. If I had the animal fat you have I would make my own suet cakes too. Used to a long time ago but suet is expensive now.
Great price on the bird house - for cedar! I’ll go look and add it to my ever=growing wish list.
We bought the paint and have free labor from Beau’s Foster Son who owes him quite a bit of labor v. ‘loans.’ He’s doing a great job, but lives 3 hours away and it RAINED about every 2 days all summer, so the weather prevented him from being 100% done this year. But, there’s hope for next year.
Life wouldn’t be the same if we didn’t have a few unfinished projects all going on at once around here!
I did get my gutter across the front of the porch and the downspout put together for the rain barrel that’s going off the corner of the house. With the new metal roof, tons of water flows off the house now and I don’t want to miss a free drop of it! :)
Mom likes to buy me birding supplies for Christmas gifts - it goes along with our ‘no more STUFF’ pledge that all gifts must be consumable - by someone - so she buys me suet in the winter.
I think she bought me 12 jars of grape jelly for the Orioles - she finds it for a couple of bucks at Aldi - and stocks me up a few years at a time. :)
Today I’ll be making suet and lemon-y kale pesto; hoping to not get the recipes mixed up - ick!
LOL yeah, I hate seeds in my pesto. We have orioles here but could never get them to like grape jelly, it has to be oranges, I look for bags in the discount rack.
That’s pretty much my recipe for suet, too - but I use bear or elk or venison fat or bacon drippings in lieu of the lard. No problems with it melting at all, but I only put it out in the cold winter months; I’ll use Farm $ Fleet brand in the summer months.
We buy Proso Millet in 50# sacks at the Farm Seed store two or three times a year mostly for the Juncos and various Sparrows. Also black shelled sunflower seed and shelled sunflower hearts...
So, no problems with grackles or cowbirds?
But, if you had them, you wouldn’t buy millet. :)
Would you please let me know how that celery works out after you transplant it? I have grown it for a little while in water, but it never seems to survive long after transplant.
I have to tell a story about a Blue Jay. Kids found one that was injured, and brought it to hubby. We lived in a trailer, and hubby was constantly letting it out to fly around during recovery. (guess who got the honor of clean up-hint it was not hubby).
We took a trip and the bird got outside and few off a little ways, but then it turned around and came back and landed on hubby’s shoulder. Neighbors freaked out.
Unfortunately, it didn’t survive the trip home. It really didn’t like traveling in the car—so maybe stress. Or maybe the injuries were internal and finally took their toll.
Dad was in high school. They had an all school assembly at the high school on the next school day. The principal told them, you boys are all going to go to fight.
I envy your weather forecast. We had a nice day yesterday. The ground isn’t solidly frozen yet and temps were around 50.
I turned under some of the wheat from this summer. The bed was the one I chose to leave fallow, and work on soil improvement. It’s looking much better. Nice dark color and shovel went in very easily down about a foot. I’ll probably plant some clover in February to turn under later.
I will. I think I will have to keep it under lights as we have no sun here in upstate.
It was a lovely weekend weather-wise here in Central Missouri, and I didn’t get a single thing accomplished in the garden.
I did get several things knocked off my outdoor chores list.
WhinnyBago is moved into the hay barn in preparation for a new roof and renovation of the LQ.
25 ton of surface rock applied to the driveway.
2 cord of firewood added to the woodpile.
Woodpile tarped down and ready for bad weather.
River boat dropped off at the boat shop for a checkup and a couple minor repairs.
I’m not ready for winter weather, but I’m closer to being ready than I was a week ago.
LOL! Your ‘To-Do’ lists look like mine - and I, too, never feel I’ve gotten it all done!
You are very well prepared, I’d say. We’ve been ordering recycled blacktop for our mile-long driveway. It’s looking better than it ever has and we don’t have to warn people coming in, ‘Veer to the left HERE to avoid a washout’ and ‘Veer to the right HERE, to not fall off and roll down into the pasture!’
It’s always something!
I got the last three raised garden beds mulched in with straw yesterday, so Mother Nature? Do your worst!
But PLEASE don’t! :)
