You’re not supposed to see them like this, their polyester prince costumes unbuttoned and backpacks hanging from the shoulders of their colonial period dresses.
Flip flops on, lunch boxes in hand, legions of workers stream into an employee parking lot at Walt Disney World, weary from another shift of making magic at the world’s busiest theme park.
This is the place where the pixie dust loses its sparkle.
It’s where the low-wage workers who power Orlando’s tourism machine leave the attractions, hotels and eateries and fade into a community that doesn’t have enough affordable housing, public transportation or opportunities in industries with higher-paying jobs.
A year after a landmark decision by Disney to raise its minimum wage for about 40,000 union workers to $15 an hour by 2021, many of those employees are better off. By October, the number of unionized workers earning more than $15 an hour had more than quadrupled to 13,057 compared to August 2018, according to the Service Trades Council Union.
But people earning near the $15 mark, long considered the gold standard for a living wage, still find their paychecks barely cover the basics — so they move farther from the attractions to find lower rent and make difficult decisions each month about whether they can pay overdue medical bills or buy enough groceries to feed a family.

what sort of specialized skills, advanced education, or expensive experience do you have to possess to wear a freaking mickey mouse costume.

They pay the market rate for that skill level. If that’s not enough, improve your skills, or decrease expenses. Minimum wage is supposed to be for students needing pocket money, not for supporting a family.
And if you’re not making enough to support kids, then don’t have kids.
They live in cheap apartments with four other people. Or they are married/living with someone who makes more money.

Why in the HELL does anyone think that $15.00 an hour TODAY is a living wage??? These screaming liberals have benefited no one EXCEPT the people collecting the payroll taxes!!! People are SO STUPID it just annoys me!!! Minimum wage was NEVER supposed to be a living wage they can keep raising the damn wage AND everything everyone buys just becomes more expensive this crap just makes my blood boil because you can’t fix STUPID!!!

I’ll tell ya, the illegal mexicans gotta go but when I drove a cab I’d pick them up until around 3am from whatever restaurants they were working at.
They’d stop at a deli for a few six packs and then off 4 to 6 would go to stay in their apartment.
They gave great tips too.
I KNOW they have to go.
But I’m just saying these folks could live a couple to a place or a husband and wife can work enough hours to make ends meet.
As for groceries, angel hair pasta and chicken thighs...a whole meal for about 2.50 a person.
