There were thousands of Trump supporters who were in DC right next to the mall but who couldn't get in due to the thousands of disruptors blocking the entrances. For unknown reasons, whoever was in charge of the arrangements for the Inauguration (Obama? , Obama-loving Park Police?) decided to have fewer security entrances to the Mall than they had in 2012. This made it easier for the disruptors to block people out.
I went to both of Bush's Inaugurations in 2000 and in 2004 when there were plenty of protesters, but not threatening physical violence. In 2016, they not only threatened violence but were violent. I was afraid to go in 2016. I did go to the amazing concert the night before. It was so inspiring and hopeful.
