A $30,000 handbag. A disastrous wine spill. And now, a country club is suing its own waiter.

It all started with a handbag.

Maryana Beyder’s wasn’t just any ordinary bag, though. It was a pink Hermès Kelly clutch, since discontinued by the pricey French fashion house. Beyder’s husband had gifted her the purse, worth $30,000, as a 30th birthday present.

So after a waiter at a posh New Jersey country club spilled some red wine on the luxury handbag last year, the real estate agent sued for negligence, demanding that the Alpine Country Club pay her the eye-popping price of her spoiled handbag.

That lawsuit had already made local headlines, but on Monday, the club in Demarest, N.J., responded with a surprising move of its own: It’s now suing its own employee — the waiter who allegedly spilled the wine — in the latest legal development after a dinner gone downhill.(snip)

Members of the club are reportedly required to pay a $65,000 initiation fee, plus $19,000 in annual dues.(snip)

In court documents filed Monday, the country club insisted it wasn’t liable for the damage to her purse, the Record reported, in addition to suing its own employee.

Errico said she was appalled that the country club has chosen to take on the cross-claim, a motion in which one defendant sues another in the same proceeding.

This was also a discontinued designer accessory.

No matter the cost, it was probably irreplaceable at this point.

Plus, if it were a splurge item, the $30,000 cost for a 30th birthday probably had some significance. If it was going to be a sentimental item in the future, it's not that anymore.

Not a U.S. club, Lady, but you’re right on about NYYC.

“And there is no lawsuit to show you because it was WITHDRAWN the next day after media got wind.”

There was no lawsuit to withdraw. There was only a response to Beyder’s lawsuit!

"If real only appreciate in value"

Then classify the wine stain as patina to prove provenance of age and origin in a future date.

“I thought we also had the article saying the club sued the waiter, and another article saying the club later dropped the suit after publicity.”

I remember how the press was reporting Zimmerman murdered Treyvon.

Really. How can the club sue the waiter for non-existent damages.

Some ‘experts’ are calling it a counter-claim but a counter-claim goes against the plaintiff.

“The club didn’t contest the woman’s claim, as evidenced by them suing their waiter, as stated in line 4 of the original post of this thread. .”

In a response to the Oct. 29 lawsuit filed by Maryana Beyder against the Alpine Country Club, the country club denied almost every one of Beyder’s allegations — including that it was liable for the damage to her Hermès Kelly bag

That's why they sued the waiter. They pushed the liability onto him.

If I were a BILLIONAIRE, I would not spend $30,000 on a purse! That’s obscene. People are starving all over the world, and someone wastes $30,000 on a PURSE? For shame!

The only suit against the waiter was the one filed by Beyder.

Non-existent damages? That might be true if the $30,000 purse wasn't spilled on. Are you saying it wasn't spilled on?

The club was probably thinking it had to sue the waiter to try to indemnify itself from claims as it was sued by the customer.

The customer sued the club, and the waiter, because people sue everyone at first, and then drop extraneous parties as leverage - but you know that.

But the woman wasn't a liar, as you claimed.

“This was also a discontinued designer accessory.”

Interesting that neither the club’s or her insurance company thought so.

I am saying that the club has paid nothing therefore the max they could sue for is nothing!

I know that! Now you also know.

But I have seen nothing that says Beyder has dropped the waiter from their lawsuit.

“But the woman wasn’t a liar, as you claimed.”

The attorney representing Alpine Country Club, Ken Merber, said that the establishment had Maryana Beyder’s handbag ‘examined by an expert’ after she accused a server of dousing it and her in red wine while she dined there last fall.

‘There are serious issues regarding the authenticity of the bag,’ Merber said.

Why didn't you post the whole quote from NorthJersey.com:

In a response to the Oct. 29 lawsuit filed by Maryana Beyder against the Alpine Country Club, the country club denied almost every one of Beyder's allegations — including that it was liable for the damage to her Hermès Kelly bag — and capped off the response by suing its own employee, according to court records.

The action is called a cross-claim, where one defendant sues another in the same proceeding.

You're a dishonest debater, and I'm done with you.

A cross-claim is filed against the plaintiff and only the plaintiff.

These dudes are listening to Beyder’s lawyer-spin.

No kidding

I have briefcases that cost nearly $5,000 but, if something happened to one of them, I’d shrug it off.

I have a few dozen more and gives me an excuse to find another ridiculous item I really don’t need...

The couple is an ass

The Club is amoral...
