THE WHO guitarist Pete Townshend has said in a new interview with Rolling Stone that he doesn't miss the band's late drummer Keith Moon and bassist John Entwistle.
"It's not going to make WHO fans very happy, but thank God they're gone," he said. "Because they were...difficult to play with. They never, ever managed to create bands for themselves. I think my musical discipline, my musical efficiency as a rhythm player, held the band together."
Townshend said Entwistle's "bass sound was like a Messiaen organ," with "every note, every harmonic in the sky. When he passed away and I did the first few shows without him, with Pino [Palladino] on bass, he was playing without all that stuff I said, 'Wow, I have a job.'"
The guitarist was equally brutal in his recollection of Moon, saying: "With Keith, my job was keeping time, because he didn't do that. So when he passed away, it was, like, 'Oh, I don't have to keep time anymore.'"

Just wow.
What a POS.
I’m glad that your man who I shared the stage with so many times died because he couldn’t keep rhythm!!”
Because there was no way he could leave the band if he didn’t like the drummer and bassist.
Does Pete Townsend entirely lack self awareness?
Agreed.
.
Keith Moon didn’t keep
Time,
He Was Time.
Keith was incredible.
Watch an isolated track of John.
Pete liked “researching” child porn.
Sorry Roger.
If he doesn’t he’s a monster.
So now he went to kiddie porn sites for RESEARCH AND he has GOOD feelings about his band mates who died.
Someone should dig around his childhood home for tortured animals that were buried
Pete has a history of saying stupid things and being inconsistent. I bet we read tomorrow that his comments were "taken out of context."
I LOVED playing the drums to some of the songs he played drums in.
“MY Generation” was GREAT to play with guitarists and singers I knew.
It was basically like playing a hundred short and sloppy and fantastic drum rolls in one song :)
Wow.

kept him honest.
Bump
Without Entwistle we'd never have Rush or bass guitarists vs just bassists.
Pete is possibly in an early stage of dementia.
..but you always hit 1 no matter what.
That was the whole point.
Of course we will.
“Under a Raging Moon” was a great tribute song.
Now I have to listen to it. :)
And “Bargain” And “I can see for miles” and “behind blue eyes” and... :)
And Pete is wrong.
I played SO MANY more riffs in that song than any other but I NEVER went off beat.
Even riffs and rolls have to be kept within the context of the song’s rhythm, and Moon always did that, as far as I’m concerned.
He’s an idiot.
Yes he does. Read his autobiography if you have any doubt. He is a supermassive black hole of self- absorption and selfishness. I wish Roger Daltrey had decked him a few more times.
Entwhistle was one of a kind.
Chris Squire seems a closer fit.
We played 2112 Overture when I was 13.
Bass.
Eminence Front,,,
Yes!
I’ve got a DVD

Out of this World
Except Pete seems
to be the one that’s
Lacking in several
Instances,,,
I think Pete is Wrong.
In fairness, he HAD gone to the police BEFOREHAND to tell them what he was going to do, and he HAD written many songs about abuse previously.
Loved him sice “Boris the spider”.
