At a current Paul Gauguin exhibition at Londons National Gallery, visitors are warned that the famous French painter had sexual relationships with young girls, including two with whom he fathered children.
A wall text notes, Gauguin undoubtedly exploited his position as a privileged Westerner [in French Polynesia] to make the most of the sexual freedoms available to him.
An audio guide even raises the question, Is it time to stop looking at Gauguin altogether?
This is what art appreciation has come to: a PC prism through which a painting, a work of literature or even a popular song must be scrutinized for racism, sexism, gender bias or just plain hurt feelings.
New York museums havent banned anything yet. But look out: Metropolitan Museum of Art director Max Hollein told The New York Times that, Art cannot solely be perceived in regard to its beauty and craftsmanship. You also have to evaluate it in light of its political messages.

Perhaps the Left will allow works they find dubious in a Nazi like “Degenerate Art” exhibition or wing. I know for sure, that wing will backfire like it did for the Nazis.
Better start burning his work.
Get Woke. Lots of Smoke.
There was an exhibit of his work at the National Gallery here in Ottawa. Very interesting and enjoyable and I do not recall such warnings being put up in advance.
Yep the Eiffel Tower, The Louvre, Versailles, all gotta come down. Planes, trains and automobiles next.
Picasso is what I was thinking. Surprised the “Me Too” types haven’t gone after him yet.
In many nations, including Mexico, if you rape a 12 year old girl, and then marry her, you face no charges
It’s not about that. It’s about destroying Western Civilization one piece at a time.
Wonder if the Met will look at Muhammad then...
Nah, that would be not understanding another culture.
I say that all of the cultural output created by anyone who is “flawed” should be destroyed. Let’s just burn it all down and start over with just the work done by the perfect people.
Scary times we live in. I suspect within 25 years, they will be coming into our homes to collect un-pc art work and books.
Muhammad had sex with a nine year girl.
When does this crowd’s embargo on Roman Polansky films begin?
Cultural genocide.
A wall text notes, Gauguin undoubtedly exploited his position as a privileged Westerner [in French Polynesia] to make the most of the sexual freedoms available to him.
I’m a bit confused. I know nothing of “sexual freedom” in French Polynesia, but what I’m getting at is, was that culture more open about sex, and he was part of that culture? Did he rape or force anyone, I think is the bottom line. If he was involved in consenting relationships, that didn’t violate any laws, that’s very different than use of force.
And what are the criteria in these situations anyway? The left did not take seriously any charges of assault against Bill Clinton, yet had a meltdown over a completely consensual situation with Trump and Stormy Daniels. How is it, that sometimes, the leftist view is that there is nothing to see here, and in other cases, the left act fire and brimstone preachers about sexual morality issues?
Don’t forget the rock musicians. Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Elvis, and probably about a zillion more need to be banned if the left wants to go down this road.
If history was judged by today’s standards, there would be no history. The only reason such warnings are being administered are the same reasons that civil war statues are being torn down and Founding Fathers are being “shamed” as white supremacist racist slaveholders. The intent is to remove all wealth from producers and transfer it to non-producers, then to destroy the producers from any sense of worth. In short, the Democrat Party playbook.
Maybe this will bring the price of his paintings down to my level.
Maybe Britain will take this as an opportunity to disband their navy as their sailors of the past certainly were not shy about impregnating the young and willing native girls they found in Polynesian Paradises.
“was that culture more open about sex”
Well, they were basically stone age tribes up until they met the white man. In those societies, if you can have babies, you are old enough to be married, and I don’t think their conception of “marriage” is quite the same as ours either.
