I teach a gen ed course to nurses. None of them ever know that at least a year of mercury rubbings and neoarsphenamine shots was the pre-penicillin treatment for syphilis. When I point out that it isn't much different in logistics than radiation and chemo for cancer used today, they see oncology with very altered eyes.
(The connection to the course is Scott Joplin and Robert Schumann, both of whom died of the effects of either tertiary syphilis or of the mercury used in treatment.)
Her is a series of paintings done by C.M. Russell on the life of a cowboy and his night with Venus.
Just a little sunshine,
Just a little rain.
Just a little pleasure,
just a little pain.
