Disney+ surpasses 10 million sign-ups since launch

Disney’s new streaming service, Disney+, has already seen 10 million sign-ups since launching Tuesday, the company announced Wednesday. Disney’s stock was up 7.35% by Wednesday’s close, adding more than $13 billion to its market cap, which now sits at $268 billion. Netflix shares were down 3.1%. Disney’s new streaming service launched Tuesday with some technical errors that prevented some users from connecting with the service. But that didn’t stop customers from flooding the sign-up page.

At $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year, Disney+ is significantly cheaper than competitors such as Netflix, which charges $12.99 for its most popular standard HD plan. Disney is offering a seven-day free trial, so likely not all of the sign-ups represent customers who will continue to pay for the service. Disney did not immediately respond to a question about whether the 10 million sign-up figure included presales. Verizon is also offering its customers a free year of Disney+, which could further boost its subscriber numbers. Even with the promotional deals, Disney+ has already achieved huge sign-up numbers while competitors such as Netflix and Hulu have taken years to build their audiences. The company has already signed up more than 10% of the high end of its forecast of 60 million to 90 million subscribers by the end of 2024.

Disney+ has yet to roll out to many countries beyond the U.S., Canada and the Netherlands, which were included in Tuesday’s launch. The platform will be available in Australia and New Zealand on Nov. 19. More countries will get Disney+ in the coming months. For comparison, it took CBS about five years to reach 8 million streaming subscribers combined for CBS All Access and Showtime. CBS said it reached its subscriber goal two years earlier than expected. Disney-owned Hulu, which has an advertising-based streaming model, claimed more than 28 million subscribers in May. Of those subscribers, 26.8 million are monthly paying customers, while the remaining have promotional accounts. Netflix claimed more than 60 million paid domestic members in its third quarter of 2019 and more than 97 million international paid members.

In short, Disney has made a significant move against its rivals just over a day since launching, even before Disney+ becomes fully available across the globe.

I got the special offer of a free year’s subscription with my unlimited data from Verizon. I signed up, and set it up on my Roku yesterday. Haven’t watched anything yet. They allow you to have 10 devices connected at a time. I specifically called Verizon to verify if my two sons, who don’t live with me, would be able to access the channel. One had already signed up for Disney+ and paid three years in advance, but he’s may be able to have his current paying subscription suspended, and take advantage of the Verizon offer for a year. I sent him the info to check it out. I also sent the info to my other son so he can add the channel to his Roku, sign in, and watch it. They are both listed as account managers on my Verizon account since they live away from me, and need to be able to purchase a new phone without the Verizon store having to call me to give my permission.

I am one of those Verizon customers taking advantage of a free year. My granddaughter loves the old Disney movies and shows!

"It must be strictly for new customers..."

No, you have to have an unlimited data plan or have FIOS internet service with them. There may be other qualifying options. I have the unlimited data on my family plan. I've had Verizon Wireless for over 16 years.

Yeah, we’re getting it for free for a year through Verizon, so we signed up yesterday. Watched “The Mandalorian” and “Willow.” Lots of content on there, that’s for sure.

It’s worth the download. The only good thing Disney Car Wars has done to date (except Rebels, which was shepherded by Filoni, who is involved with this, and I’ve never seen Rogue One).

I’m sure I will still be able to get Disney content from Netflix via my DVD subscription. Disney can’t keep Netflix from buying discs.

Apparently all Disney content will be off Netflix by next June. I assume that refers to both online Netflix and DVD-rent Netflix

No, you can't. Nexflix has a contract with Disney, that has now expired. As the contracted terms expire for movies - generally two or three years on Netflix, those movies will move to Disney+, which is why Netflix is running scared.

Netflix will receive no further movies from Disney.

Actually I have Verizon for phone. Comcast for cable internet. Florida doesn’t have FIOS. I had it in Maryland and loved it. Not sure what I was thinking. Of course just having Verizon cell service won’t get me Free Disney.

Oh brother. Just reread your reply. I don’t have unlimited data on phone.

Just out of curiosity, since I have a 13 year old girl.

Do they have old and new series that came out on Disney Channel?

Got rid of cable, and she’s been saying she misses some of those shows.

Here is a list of all “All Confirmed Disney+ Content” on reddit
https://www.reddit.com/r/DisneyPlus/wiki/disneypluscontent

I would assume that is is reasonably accurate

First week is free. I considered signing up to check out the new Star Wars show (just one episode available). I doubt that after that first week they’ll have anywhere near that number of subscribers but time will tell.

Please ask her which shows she misses, and I will ask my 11, 12, and 15 YO (step-granddaughters) if they would be interested in seeing them. Thanks.

And I asked myself why so many vote for democrats. The same reason they jump to join the Disney network thinking they are all about G rated wholesome family entertainment when in fact they are just about the gay agenda these days. Anyone who joins should not be calling themselves Christian.

I wonder if they counted those of us who were converted months ago from the ESPN+ that gave access to extra content on the web site? I was transitioned over that way but I did not take out a new subscription. A couple of good things about ESPN+ is getting more hockey games (NY Islanders) and lacrosse coverage.
