I saw Donn Pierce, the author, in college. He was a buddy of my humanities professor. They showed the movie, then Pierce spoke.
The story was loosely based on his own experience on a P-farm in west Florida. Like an Obama autobiography, the characters were composites. Pierce was the actual egg eater, though the rest of that episode was portrayed accurately.
