Krispy Kreme tells student to stop donut reselling service in Minnesota
CBS News ^ | November 4, 2019 | Staff

An enterprising Minnesota college student who drove to Iowa every weekend to buy hundreds of Krispy Kreme doughnuts that he then sold to his own customers in the Twin Cities area said he's shutting down his service after getting a warning from the confectionary giant.

There have been no Krispy Kreme stores in Minnesota for 11 years.

"I have been told I have to shut down operations," Jayson Gonzalez, 21, of Champlin, Minnesota, wrote to his Facebook followers. "I figured it would come eventually, but it arrived early."

Yech.

Krispy Kreme is bad enough without being non-fresh.

As long as they didn’t steal them...I don’t see where Krispy Kreme can stop them.

I think they are ONLY good when they are warm and fresh (like within 15 minutes)

Otherwise they are like chewing into a cold, oil-soaked sugar bread. (which is what they are)

True. The first time I had one of their donuts I was shocked by how sickeningly sweet they were.

Any company with a shred of intelligence would try to figure out a way to expand distribution into an area with that kind of demand for your product. Maybe hire the guy who’s currently doing guerrilla marketing and legitimize the operation? Oh no, let’s shut that down and prohibit the sale of our product. “Genius”...

He could probably sell them if he repackaged them and just called them generic treats. As long as folks know they’re KK, then KK is liable for any problems.

Last Wednesday morning about 24 boxes of Krispy Kreme donuts appeared in the break rooms and atop filling cabinets throughout the office.

Nobody knew who bought them or laid them out - it's like we were visited by the doughnut fairy.

Just "Happy Wednesday" I guess.

In a common sense world, I’d agree completely. But I can just see this guy selling a box to someone and they then claim a rat’s in it. Who gets sued? Not the guy paying down his student debt, that’s for sure. KK would have to deal with that, the publicity fall-out, and all the other BS. Not worth it.

As long as they didn’t steal them...I don’t see where Krispy Kreme can stop them.

I see signs in Chinatown at the big grocery stores:

Items sold are not for re-sale.

Don’t know if they can enforce that.

Don’t know if KK has those signs.

Don’t know if they could enforce that if they had them.

There’s nothing special about Krispy-Kreme donuts. A copy of their “recipe” is readily available from ingredients suppliers.

This kid owns the customers and the distribution - he should just tell KK to GFT and produce his own donuts.

Krispy needs to learn from this. There is an underserved market in that area. They could be raking in the bucks.
In a just world, they would make this young man the Regional Director.

He has good marketing skills, and should simply find a new source for his donuts. Plenty other Donuts in the sea!
Uhh, maybe I should rephrase that.

That makes total sense. I get it now why they ‘pounced’.

I think there is brand management issues here. If he sold dough nuts, fine. But if he is selling them as Krispy Kreame, he is representing them with out permission. Should there be a liability question, who gets the finger pointed at them - Krispy Kreame or the kid?

Were I KK, I'd work with the kid to honor his initiative and set him up in a franchise where he lives. Win/Win.

It is a weird flavoring but I hate the grainy texture of the dough. Raised doughnuts should be moist only, no sandiness about it.

I prefer Dunkin’, but then, we’ve lost about ALL our great German bakeries around here and THAT was the best. Even our local college take-out and office complex restaurant had great honeydips for cheap, compared to Dunkin’ even at the time.

I’m stuck with Dunkin’, and won’t eat Krispy (perhaps that’s the trouble - they think they should be crispy?).

I bet the store he bought at was not happy about the loss in sales.

Maybe if he and his regular customers formed a Co-op.

Krispy Kremes are about six levels below a moon pie and RC cola combination. You can eat them but why?

“Plenty other Donuts in the sea!”

I prefer my mom’s not-very-sweet deep-fried cake donuts. Haven’t had one in a half century, but they were my favorites.
