The incident began about 11:45 p.m. Monday when a man standing on a narrow ledge on an overpass forced authorities to shut down both sides of the 101 near Hollywood Boulevard.
The man held on to the fence for hours, facing officers who tried to get him to surrender as firefighters set up a ladder from the freeway below.
He surrendered around 9:40 a.m. after authorities started cutting a hole in the fence, Los Angeles police Capt. Scot Williams told KTLA.
All lanes of the 101 were reopened soon after. The man, who's about 25 years old, will be arrested on suspicion of trespassing with a parole violation and will be evaluated for mental illness, Williams said.

Surface streets surrounding Hollywood were also jammed for miles, causing major delays for morning commuters. "I know it was an inconvenience," Williams said. "It impacted a lot of peoples lives, including my own coming in to work this morning, but were happy that it did come to a safe conclusion with no one being injured."

I commuted in the Valley for 20 years. I wouldnt be surprised if some commuter might try to get at this guy.
Just one guy, hanging on the fence, stops traffic for miles.
Must be why for eight hours it was reported as “police activity” with no further details.
Mustn’t let the public actually know what’s going on, apparently?
They should have just put a net or airbag under the overpass and then pelted him with their Shotguns loaded with Beanbags.
Trigger finger highway opening. Celebration to follow.
There is always the guy who wants to shoot the guy or try and get him down themselves...why trigger those guys?
bttt
Visited California for the first time recently and cannot imagine how anyone could ride those highways every single day.
Yes, you may. Also acceptable (but less so) would be; stay home for cigars & day drinking.
I ws thinking the same thing. 8>)
“shut down both sides of the 101 near Hollywood Boulevard.”
“Surface streets surrounding Hollywood were also jammed for miles, causing major delays for morning commuters”
“safe conclusion with no one being injured.”
I wonder how many fender benders and major accidents with injuries happened.
Nah, just divert to fire closed 405 or the Pasadena freeway
The Japanese have the right idea. Suicide in front of a commuter train and they go after the estate for the expenses of the delay. There are more socially responsible ways to off yourself.
Quickest way to get a cat out of a tree is to shoot it. No need for the fire department.
The people out there needed this like a hole in the head.
Hope somebody good can run against Newsome, et al. out there. They need the spawn of Sarah Palin and Donald Trump to talk sense into what are clearly heads full of mush in that state.
Was in Santa Clara last week.
They could double my salary, not.
No sympathy for morons who pull these idiotic stunts. End it quickly and open the highway. How many fires were fire fighters not able to get to quickly? How many rapes and murders were the cops not able to stop because of this moron?
Also, you gotta figure after implementing a draconian shoot the idiot policy, the issue clears itself up in pretty short order.
