Twin Peaks is an American mystery horror drama television series created by Mark Frost and David Lynch that premiered on April 8, 1990, on ABC. The series developed a notably loyal following in 1990, but declining ratings led to its cancellation after its second season in 1991. It nonetheless gained a devoted cult following and has been referenced in a wide variety of media. In subsequent years, Twin Peaks is often listed among the greatest television series of all time, and is considered a landmark turning point in television drama.

The series follows an investigation headed by FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) and local Sheriff Harry S. Truman (Michael Ontkean) into the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) in the fictional suburban town of Twin Peaks, Washington. The show's narrative draws on elements of detective fiction, but its uncanny tone, supernatural elements, and campy, melodramatic portrayal of eccentric characters also draw on American soap opera and horror tropes. Like much of Lynch's work, it is distinguished by surrealism, offbeat humor, and distinctive cinematography. The acclaimed score was composed by Angelo Badalamenti with Lynch.

Strange show. I found it intriguing at first but lost interest after a few episodes because the storyline didn’t seem to be going anywhere. It just seemed weird for the sake of being weird.

Julee Cruise sang the song “Falling” that was layered onto the Twin Peaks instrumental theme.

The Double R Diner in real life was the Mar-T Cafe (now Tweedes). Their cherry 🍒 pie 🥧 was pretty good.

This show was way ahead of its time. Really was more suited to being released now (I know Showtime has a remake but it can’t hold a candle to the original). But it’s one of those shows that was unprecedented.

I have both the Julee Cruise album (Floating Into The Night) and the Twin Peaks soundtrack in my collection.

Outstanding music that is best played late at night with a tumbler of bourbon. There was one particular song from that Julee Cruise album that has a surprise tempo change in the middle of it that always raises the hair on my neck when I hear it. I won't spoil it for others by mentioning the song but go ahead and stream the album and you'll come across it.

I remember watching the entire series way back when. The thing that still sticks with me is the Mom’s reaction (Sarah Parker?) to her daughters death.

That still hurts my heart to this day. :(

Other than that, it was goofy and weird with REALLY good music, and totally unlike anything else we’d ever seen up to that point in TV Entertainment.

Was that first on HBO or another cable-only channel? I don’t remember...

P.S. ABC? Wow! Also, it’s no ‘Firefly!’

There will NEVER be another - because Nathan Fillion is getting too old and Ron Glass is dead. :(

The same with Lost.

JJ Abrams admitted in an interview they were just throwing every plot twist they could to keep the show running as long as possible.

After awhile there were so many twists that characters had no grounding.

I think what made Babylon 5 so good was that Straczynski had a five year plan for the show. That was largely kept to, except when it looked like they were going be cancelled at four years the "ending" got rushed, then they picked up a fifth year that was cobbled together.

It aired on ABC.

And yes, Laura’s mother’s reaction to her death was remarkably gut-wrenching and shattering. I still remember it well, after reading your comment.
