Teslas stock popped big when trading began on Thursday, after the electric automaker turned in an unexpectedly profitable third-quarter and better than anticipated progress toward getting its Shanghai factory operational.
Skeptics had legitimate concerns in the past, but Tesla is now building cash, winning market share, and boosting margins - all while preparing to launch products in untapped segments and regions, Piper Jaffray analyst Alexander Potter said in a note to investors after the results. Piper Jaffray has an overweight price target on Tesla with a $372 a share price target.
Wall Street analysts were largely surprised by Teslas results, showing more optimism about the companys future than after previous quarterly reports.

Sorry but would not believe anything coming from Musk.
Tesla shares pop the most in 6 years after earnings show its building cash, boosting margins.
...and burning people alive.

A little more than 52 minutes into the earnings call, Elon Musk was discussing Model S and X sales and added this bit of information:
I forgot to mention, were also expecting theres going to be an over-the-air improvement that will improve the power of the Model S, X, and 3. Thats, by the way, coming in a few weeks. Should be in the order of 5% power improvement due to improved firmware. Drew, do you want to say anything on that?
Drew Baglino, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), replies:
Yeah, we just continue to learn how to optimize the motor control in our products. And yeah, so 5% improvement for all Model 3 customers and 3% for S and X.
So, bonus, we should be expecting in a few weeks a small speed boost for all of the Tesla cars. But then we had the following fun dialogue between Musk and Baglino:
Musk: Yeah, and theres also the single-pedal driving that will improve the range as well.
Baglino: Very excited about that. Its an improvement in comfort and feel.
Musk: Yeah, its easier to drive. And it improves the range.
Baglino: Yes. And faster Supercharging.
Elon: Faster Supercharging, yeah.
Baglino: For Standard Range and Standard Range Plus customers, which is a big deal.
Mebbe he can stop his cars from turning into portable crematoriums when getting into minor accidents
“Mebbe he can stop his cars from turning into portable crematoriums when getting into minor accidents”
Hitting a tree at 90 is not a minor accident!
“...and burning people alive.”
More likely to happen in an ICE car.
I really like tortilla chips and Tesla.

You still drive that Pinto?
“You still drive that Pinto?”
The Pinto actually had the better safety record of comparable cars.
He’s building lots of cars. I live in a minor city in the Industrial midwest and see them all the time. And the cars appear to be very popular with their owners. Seems to me like he’s getting things done.
Tesla just did a $2.35b stock and bond sale in May 2019.

You’d hope the company still has some loose change from that round of fund-raising.
The Pinto actually had the better safety record of comparable cars.
I suspect that Tesla has “the better safety record of comparable cars.”
But what fun is that?
With at least several major car makers introducing better electric cars...at lower prices...
...
Easy to say, much harder to prove.
Have you ever heard of “cooking the books”? Wouldn’t believe anything from Musk.
“...and burning people alive.”
Yeah. Every time I or a friend or family member were trapped in a car that caught on fire from crashing it at 90 miles-per-hour, emergency personnel easily opened the door with the the protruding outside handle.
It’s stuff like this that make us refuse to buy cars that have electric windows because people are always driving them into the water and drowning because they can’t roll down the windows. We see it all of the time.
No one’s going to buy one of these death traps any more—especially when they fail to throttle the accelerator. I mean who wants a car that can go from 0 to 60 in 3 seconds. You might get whiplash.
No one is going to buy these cars any more. No one.
[Irrational Tesla rant off.]
Nice quarterly, big pop. It started in premarket, gave up some ground in the morning. We’ll see what happens Friday!
Screw Tesla and their stupid cars
When did “pop” start to mean “do well”?
