Our waterfowl season opened yesterday in California. Yes, we're still allowed to chase those fowl. I pulled a 2-dayer and just got home. I'm beat.
As for the hunting, I got a few. Nothing lights out but just getting out with the dog was well worth the effort.
Now, I'm ready for bed...LOL
You are not getting older. The ducks are just getting wiser.
Goodnight Mrs. Calabash wherever you are. 8>)
I used to push myself pretty hard when hunting. Being “ beat” afterwards was half the point. I’m sure you and the dog will sleep well. And recovering with a roast duck dinner is good, too.
Beau took up goose hunting last year - went to South Dakota and hunted Snow Geese. They made the BEST summer sausage!
Glad to hear that you can still enjoy hunting in CA. :)
Getting duck(s) is a bonus. The fact getting out into nature with the dog is well worth it. I cherish these times.
Any idea what kind of goose? Maybe a specklebelly?....aka whitefront.
Exactly. We raise Plot Hounds and Treeing Walker Coon Hounds for Bear and Raccoon, respectively. (Sometimes they over-lap.) For fun and very little profit! ;)
Hunting with the dogs in the woods is always a blast. Well, most times. Sometimes it’s muddy, or wet, or you or they get lost, or, or, or...LOL!
How did you find someone else a job? Are you a recruiter?
Hey it definitely beats the alternative!
Mmmmm! I would eat my left foot if it were smoked - or wrapped in bacon and grilled! ;)
And BBQ, too!
Has anyone here ever cooked one of those Canadian geese are all over pooping up the place?
A friend of mine said they did once but it was real greasy, but I think they just cooked it wrong. They look delicious!
is there a way to cook them that makes them better? I know you have to cook a duck a long long time to get all the fat rendered. I think those Canadian geese would need at least 12 hours over a slow roast, if not longer
Repeat after me:
“Youth is wasted on the young”
It helps
:-)
I made BBQ Wild Hog from TX in the Instant Pot last week. Man, Oh, MAN! :)
So, yes. I’d eat my left foot slathered in ‘Bob’s Bitchin’ BBQ’ or ‘Sweet Baby Ray’s.’ LOL!
(I hope no one is going to actually hold me to this!) :)
At the time I was a veteran’s career counselor at the state unemployment office. Later I was a recruiter and recruiting executive. I have posted here before that I would help anyone here, their family, friends, church family or whatever to find work for free. I will search job boards for jobs in their area and occupation. I have done so already for a couple of dozen FReepers.
I haven’t felt like hunting for several years. I have a lifetime Florida hunting and fishing license because of my age.
Of course getting old beats not getting old.
A friend told me he took an extended goose hunt, back in the day. On his way home, he rescued a damsel in distress, that was stuck in a snowbank, after dark, and in some peril. He said she took him to a motel and showed her gratitude. When he got home, his dad looked at him and said “Boty, you better slow down. That goose hunting is gonna kill you.”
Wild duck isn’t fat, around here. Treat ‘em like a roasting chicken, for the most part. Geese can be very fatty. Roast so that they can drain, and you should be fine.
