In my Cal III class we had reached the section on calculating water pressure on shapes and sections, with the ultimate aim being able to calculate pressure and force on dams. The professor pointed out that this was all well and good when you’re talking about smooth concrete structures, but it could become much tougher if not impossible if you were working with earthen dams. Those that had been around for a long time, suffering through time and tides would be virtually impossible. Then he said, “It just goes to show you that you can’t solve every dam problem with calculus.”
