Florida Braces for ‘Absolute Monster’ Hurricane Dorian

MIAMI (AP) — Unsure where Hurricane Dorian is going to land over Labor Day weekend, many Florida residents faced a sense of helplessness as they prepared for what President Donald Trump said could be an “absolute monster” of a storm. “All indications are it’s going to hit very hard and it’s going to be very big,” Trump said in a video he tweeted Thursday evening, comparing Dorian to Hurricane Andrew, which devastated South Florida in 1992.The National Hurricane Center said the Category 2 storm is expected to strengthen into a potentially catastrophic Category 4 with winds of 130 mph and slam into the U.S. on Monday somewhere between the Florida Keys and southern Georgia — a 500-mile stretch that reflected the high degree of uncertainty this far out.

How many hurricanes have been “declared” to be “monsters?” I’m guessing nearly all of them that reached Category 2 or larger.

After 30 years living in suburban MD south of DC, I achieved retirement and moved back to Indiana. I’m quite happy to be rid of the few hurricanes that came up the coast in exchange for being back to the winter snow of my northern Indiana hometown.

I’m trying to keep up with the latest msm labels. Which is worse, “Absolute Monster” or “Biblical”?

If history repeats itself, the Corps of Engineers is already draining a good portion of the lake in anticipation of Dorian’s landfall. I still have a house in West Palm and have been arguing for years that they should just fix the damn levees and retain the largest source for drinking water in South Florida, rather than flushing it into the ocean every time a storm threatens.

Calm doesn’t make “Trump’s fault!” headlines.

If the collective demonrat mind control works, it’ll hit square on Mar-a-Lago but they’re usually wrong. And it proves how they don’t care about the lives of the resort’s minority employees.

All the Democrat cares about is himself/ herself. They have their zombies convinced that they care for them also. Nothing could be further from the truth.

No water. Does no one realize water comes from the kitchen tap? Did they not ever think of saving up plastic bottles and fill them with cheap tap water during emergencies? Can they not over-night a $30 Water Bob to fill their bathtubs with, again, cheap tap water?

It’s amazing how fast Florida’s grocery shelves go empty. It’s like they’re totally taken by surprise at news of hurricanes. What did they do with the wood they used last time to cover their windows? Can they not keep a few rolls of duct tape on hand? Did they not think to ask for a generator from Santa back in December when the Home Depot had plenty in stock? Could they not have picked up a few cases of pork ‘n beans last July 4th and stored them out of the way under the bed?

See, see! Algore swore there’d be floods. Another of his buddies predicted when Trump was elected, Mar-a-Largo would be underwater.

Corps of Engineers is smarter than our water authority who refused to drain ours when they knew a week to 10 days out that the waters were coming. 40+ feet and they took no responsibility for the lives, homes and property that was lost last October.

There were two ways to get into town. Two of those across bridges. They let the wall of water take out one bridge. People had to drive an extra hour to get a gallon of milk or get their kids to school or to work. If they had a work to go to after so many businesses were closed.

I KNEW they could drain the water because they did it 40 some years ago. If they could do it then, they certainly could do it today. It’s 90 feet deep here and they drained it so low that us kids could hop across the boulders to the other side. Great fun!

But nooooo. They sit behind their computers a couple hours away and pick lint from their belly buttons and fine people who can’t get already booked up crews to come in and haul off debris.

I understand your point and agree about the function of the Corps. Lake Okeechobee is less that 20 feet deep and represents a substantial portion of the fresh water supply for South Florida. Because of the fragility of the levee system, the level is reduced to something like 12 feet when we have approach tropical storms and/or hurricanes. The level of the lake is lowered by releasing millions of gallons of stored water through man-made canals which eventually end up in either the Atlantic or the Gulf. In drought years, the absence of this water is reflected in water-use restriction galore. My only point was, fix the levees around Lake Okeechobee and store more water.

Just talked to my daughter west of Daytona. Told her to hit the road today

Thousands of "escapees" two years ago were stuck on the interstate in horrific gridlock unable to get out of the state for dozens of hours with nowhere to run or hide. We also had wise relatives of ours telling us (from out of state) to leave. We stayed put. We were fine with periods of no power. So you light a candle.

No power can be dealt with. But being stranded on the intestate in your car in gridlock for hundreds of miles away from your home for dozens of hours, in some cases as much as two days, is far worse and far more dangerous. Especially for a lone female.

Welcome home! At least your in an area that has the snow trucks to clear the roads. Make sure you have extra food and supplies in case you get snowed in and if possible a wood stove to heat and cook upon.

I’m wondering if the name Dorian is intended as a tribute to Oscar Wilde. Does Dorian identify as male, female, or gender-fluid?
