Its a safe bet to say that hundreds of millions of U.S. flyers since Reids attempted attack have had to remove their shoes while passing through a TSA security checkpoint. TSA also says that since the screening of shoes was initiated it has screened close to 10 BILLION (with a B) of them. The security agency says the figure is a conservative estimate, too.
This is where we must ask ourselves why were still taking our shoes off, given theres never been a shoe bomb-style attack thats originated on U.S. soil. Indeed, Reid as well as the infamous Underwear Bomber (Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab) boarded flights which came from Europe, not the U.S. Their terrorist bosses had identified key security weaknesses in the system that transported international travelers to America and then took advantage of them.
The simplest answer to why the U.S. still requires most air travelers to submit their shoes for security inspection after all these years boils down to caution on the part of TSA and the government. And such caution owes its existence to several factors, starting with the fact that Reids attack nearly succeeded and that the terrorist world never lacks for copycats. Sooner or later, the thinking goes, some terror group will try again to insert a shoe-style bomber onto a flight, preferably one originating in the U.S., if only to prove that our aviation security practices arent terror-proof.

I just pray a bomber never hides C4 up his rectum.
Given that (lack of) logic, since we had Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab try to set his underwear on fire, why isn't every passenger forced to strip down to their birthday suits?
But that's where the TSA seems to keep their collective heads...
What the hell are you doing? Dont you realize the goobermint reads these threads? I have to fly to see the grandchildren in a couple weeks and if I end up getting inspected I am coming after you.
The reason is because George W Bush was a terrible president who inconvenienced Americans for what terrorists did, and created vast new federal bureaucracies because he could.
It’s a plot devised by the Global Sock Manufacturing Consortium to shame People into throwing away their old Socks with holes in them and replacing them with brand new Socks.
Think of OPEC and replace Oil with Socks, it becomes OSEC...
JNap said ‘The System Worked!’.
What about that so called ‘Underwear Bomber’? Remember him?
He was a young guy from Africa. I half expected the TSA to start demanding that all passengers remove all their underwear before boarding any flights. For some reason, that hasn’t yet happened.
They own stock in companies that make socks?
It isn't about security, it is about collecting federal paychecks and benefits. And performing theatre for the public.
Why Does TSA Make Flyers Remove Their Shoes?
Islam.
No other reason.
Islam.
They should have a way to be pre-screened to avoid all of this, oh, it should be FREE.
I joined the Trusted Traveler program to avoid this, the zapper machine, and to expedite entry into the country.
Also, lines are much, much shorter.
We need a targeted profiling of passengers, not an outright harassment of law-abiding citizens.
because Bin Laden and the New World Order won. If he could laugh in hell, he would.
I don’t have an issue with the scanning. But lately, at one end or the other, there is this TSA guy shouting at the lines of people giving conflicting instructions and even though I know what to do, confuses me and a lot of other passengers and we end up in wrong line and he chews us out for that and makes us feel like idiots.
When they are normal and calm and speak normally no issue.
They remind me of sadistic drill sergeants.
I just got a NEXUS card which means I don’t have to take off my shoes for TSA. Of course with two metal hips I always set off the alarm bells so I always get the wand treatment.
