I agree that prisoners should be compensated in line with the prevailing wage. Otherwise, this is an unfair competition to other wage earners. Further, if the going rate for work done by prisoners is a slave wage, the skills the released prisoner may have gained during his time in prison will be almost worthless. Thus he may not be able to support himself, making a return to a criminal lifestyle and to prison more likely.
Living wage for whom? Have you given your vacation homes to a few poor families, Bernie? You’re denying them equal standing.
Those non-living wage folks are most likely making living wages but are spending willy nilly. No one needs to go out every Friday and Saturday nights (and in between). No one needs to eat out most of their meals. No one needs to have a closet the size of another room and not wear 95% of the clothes. No one needs to have a salon amount of beauty supplies. No one needs bling out the wazoo. No one needs to forgo the rent to take a vacation or buy a new car. Those are wants, not needs.
Inmates have long worked for credit card companies. Imagine having them do video chat with card holders. “Hey, Danny, this is Big Bad Dawg calling you about this hotel charge on your MasterCard. You say it wasn’t you? Yo, man, don’ gimme dat. You got a bey bey on the da side. Dat you’re woman behind you, dude? Do she know?”
If the victims were still alive and able to keep voting for Leftists...oh, wait....
Anyway, if still alive they would be getting the same sorts of “free” stuff” too.
This is a half-good idea. Phone calls are crazy cheap nowadays, there’s no reason they should be charged a crazy amount. Hell, the jail already has internet service, a bunch of voip phones makes the true cost close to zero.
Video chat, sure, make it secured to where a couple computers can only run Skype/Facetime/Hangouts/yahoo messenger applications. All of which are free services. Guards can easily watch any screen to make sure E there’s no hanky-panky.
“Living wage”? And what, exactly, is that? Hell, put em to work cleaning roadsides, smashing grovel, whatever city work is available, and pay them 20% below market rate for that job. They’re in prison, not an all-inclusive job program...
