The Later Work of Caravaggio (1571-1610) - to the music of Anthony Holborne

The later art of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610), a seminal Italian Baroque painter. This video covers the years 1598-1610, and includes his most famous works. Much of his work is religious, with an unposed sense of the moment and, for me, too much blood and guts. There is a strong emphasis on the emotion of the subjects. Caravaggio is known for his use of light and shade - chiaroscuro - which also became known as tenebrism . This style, and his return to realism after the excesses of the Mannerists, has led some to consider him a father of modern painting. He was a substantial influence on Peter Paul Rubens, Jusepe de Ribera, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and Rembrandt. Music by Anthony Holborne (1545-1602).

His work was shocking in that there were holes in people's clothes, worm holes in apples, and worshippers with dirty feet. Not the traditional way of portraying these subjects.

1604-6, Madonna di Loreto

1606, St Francis in Meditation

You’re good. Got to give you that. Most realistic serpents I’ve ever seen on a Medusa. Sort of a nightmare character with the most incredible teeth. Yep. Hillary works.

Mardie, have you seen Simon Schama’s Power of Art, originally a BBC miniseries I think? I got it from the library.
Caravaggio and Bernini are 2 of the 8 artists covered. A very dark series, IMO but I guess he had to inject a lot of drama to make it interesting.

No, I haven’t. I’ll put a note in my file about it. Thank you.

Cellini was another one with a dramatic story. Along with the book of academic nudes mother gave me when I was less than 10 years old, she gave me Cellini’s Autobiography. Later, as an Art History student, I loved the discussion in the book of country vs city eggs for egg tempera. But he, like Caravaggio, was on the lam for murder.

So very glad you liked it. Took a LOT of careful editing to minimize the blood and gore. His only signature on a painting was in the blood of a cut off head.

The only one I’ve seen who holds a baby as if it has weight. I love the range of faces in his art. Reminds me of British TV, which specializes in character faces. And you’re most welcome.

Amazing talent. Aside from all the other details, just to be able to paint those realistic fluffy beards and facial wrinkles is incredible.
