The speed of light is the speed limit through time and space. The inflationary period after the big bang was the actual expansion of spacetime and did not have any speed limit.

Not sure about that. In any case, what about the period when the expansion apparently began to *accelerate*, under the influence of so-called "dark energy". This supposedly happened several billion years after the initial Big Bang.
