The speed of light is the speed limit through time and space. The inflationary period after the big bang was the actual expansion of space-time and did not have any speed limit. Not sure about that. In any case, what about the period when the expansion apparently began to *accelerate*, under the influence of so-called "dark energy". This supposedly happened several billion years after the initial Big Bang.
