Hunting for shiny, rainbow-coloured gemstones, miners found a different kind of treasure a wonderfully preserved fossil skeleton of an ancient sea monster.
The marine reptile lived 70 million years ago at the same time as the dinosaurs and was unearthed from a part of Alberta, Canada, that used to be underwater.
The skeleton of the fearsome predator has, rarely, been very well preserved, with only its flippers missing.

The miners discovered a nearly complete Tylosaurus. This was the alpha predator of the Cretaceous era Inland Sea that covered the Canadian and US Great Plains. This member of the mosasaur family grew up to 50 feet. It starred in the "Jurassic World" movie.

While we're on the subject, I saw something 'weird' in the water at the beach where I go here in New York.
I don't know if you could make it out in this cell phone video I took, but give it a try.
If you don't see it, let me know and I'll try to point it out some other way.

Interesting. There is a picture at the link, presumably that of a reconstructed animal.
It looks like a crocodile.

Yeah, I see it. Is that the shore break at Fire Island? LOL!

I had a book on ancient creatures and dinosaurs etc when I was a child. That creature was one of my favorites.

No. Just an usually high tide at the local beach here in NYC. No doubt a result of man-made Gore Bull Warming. :)
