In my reading of 2017, Bannon was let go to appease Mitch McConnell and get the tax bill passed.

You’ll recall that Bannon was backing people McConnell didn’t want.

I guess the peace pipe was smoked and Trump call Bannon’s dogs off and told him: “Get out of the country. Help us in Europe, but your time in the US is finished”

This is my theory.
