No Signs of Aliens in the Closest 1,300 Stars, Hunt Funded by Russian Billionaire Reveals

While the truth might be out there, technological aliens don't seem to be — at least not yet. New results from the most comprehensive Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) program ever undertaken — which surveyed 1,327 nearby stars for signals from intelligent beings — have turned up empty.

"There's certainly nothing out there glaringly obvious," ... lead author of a paper about the results, which were published in The Astrophysical Journal, told Live Science. "There's no amazingly advanced civilizations trying to contact us with incredibly powerful transmitters."

While the team didn't find anything this time around, Price said that there could be many explanations for the lack of alien signals. Perhaps the search was conducted at the wrong frequencies, or those signals were hidden by radio interference from Earth. Any such undertaking is limited by the methods and discoveries that humans happen to have made in the course of our own history

The search was conducted as part of the Breakthrough Listen initiative, a 10-year, $100-million endeavor funded by Russian billionaire Yuri Milner that aims to scan the skies for technosignatures: transmissions or other evidence created by technological creatures on other worlds. The initiative, which kicked off in 2015, relies on two of the world's most powerful telescopes — the 328-foot-diameter (100 meters) Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, and the 210-foot-diameter (64 m) Parkes Telescope in New South Wales, Australia — to try to eavesdrop on alien communications.

In their latest data release, researchers analyzed 1 petabyte (or 1 million gigabytes) of data in both radio and optical wavelengths, looking at more than a thousand stars within 160 light-years of Earth. Several thousand interesting signals appeared during the search, though all turned out to originate from mundane sources, like human-made satellites.

human-made satellites.

I hope the writer doesn't fall into a humanhole because of a missing humanhole cover.

Well, we have tens of millions of “illegal” aliens here in the States to go along with tens of millions of space cadets also known as Democrats.

My pet theory is that the solution to the Fermi Paradox is that developing civilizations tend to go libtard overtime eventually destroying themselves.

The older I get, the less likely I find myself believing that life came into being beyond Earth, much less intelligent life. The factors involved in life coming about number in the millions: so many more minutae than we currently comprehend.

Art Bell knew where they were but he’s gone now. We just missed them by this much.

"Perhaps the search was conducted at the wrong frequencies, or those signals were hidden by radio interference from Earth."

I highly doubt that ET broadcasts on the radio band. They're probably using some kind of quantum entanglement transmission technology.

When our people finally discover the same technology, the waves are going to explode with communications from ET.

Whatever it is, it would have to be way out there for us not to see it or capture the communication. Their technology would probably appear God like to us.

The 1301st star is the one to look out for.

Indeed. Just imagine how our current technology would look to someone living just a hundred years ago in 1919.

Some new inventions from 1910 -1919:

The zipper
The Oreo Cookie
Stainless Steel
First Crossword puzzle
First Pop-up Toaster
Lifesavers candy
First Military Tank

At our current accelerating rate of advancement, just think where we'll be a hundred years from today in 2119. I'm pretty sure the vast majority of us can't imagine that future.

1,327 stars is not a very broad base, especially considering that there are anywhere between 100 billion and a trillion stars in just our galaxy. It is also very likely that only one out of a few million stars even have planets capable of supporting life. Our sun is very stable compared to most. Most stars are small red dwarfs that tend to be violent flare stars, while most of the rest are binary stars, ones with short life spans, etc. And there must be a planet in precisely the proper orbit with all the proper conditions. And although life may be extremely rare in the universe, there are around 10^30 stars out there. A one out of a trillion chance of intelligent life per star will mean there are more intelligent civilizations than bacteria on earth.

If they used quantum entanglement transmission technology we would never detect them.

If such a technology could be made it would be totally hacker proof, you could never listen in.

Only the two individuals sending and receiving could be in the conversation.

They must look intra-terrestrial!

That would be true per our present understanding, but who knows how far technology can go?

If these same techniques had been used from these 1300 stars 20, 50 and 100 years ago would they have found any signs of life on earth?

Could be the “Dark Forest” theory. That theory suggests that we haven’t been contacted because other civilizations have either been destroyed by a more advanced race or they are all hiding. And we just haven’t been discovered yet by this advanced race.

But more than likely what’s happening is that life may be plentiful, but the vast majority of it is simple lifeforms. Life evolving to the point of intelligence may be rare enough that intelligent civilizations are spread out so much with space and time that they will never meet.
