When I was a pup, it was rare that we had enough kids to play nine man teams. Our common practice was to have the batting team furnish a guy who acted as both catcher and umpire. It actually worked pretty well because if he didn't do his job, he'd get his come uppance in the next inning.

Yes, there were sometimes disagreements about calls. No, there were no fights because we played baseball for fun. Imagine that!

I played little league in the late 60’s. It was rare that any parent made a stink. The coach was the boss.

Different generation. My parents were born in the early 1930’s and respected authority and let us kids be kids.
