I remember people here in 2016 sharing images of news articles from early to mid 1980 warning of the lead Carter had over Reagan.

Yep, the predictions were that Carter would glide to an easy re-election. Instead Reagan slew the sweater wearing peanut farmer/White House plumber and eight years later rode off into the sunset as the old western heroes did.
Carter suffered the gloom of irrelevance as evil doers should.
