For the auto business, "The pain is just beginning," according to Nomura analyst Masataka Kunugimoto and his team. "We now expect global auto demand to be down 3%," year on year, in 2019, he told clients recently.

He is not alone. At bank after bank, analysts are coming round to the idea that the world may have passed "peak car," and that in the future humans will need fewer personal vehicles.

One thing for sure - driving isn't as fun as it used to be. Also, I notice that 16 y/o boys are not nearly as excited to get their driver's license as in the past.

When you’re paying about $5,000/year in insurance, because you’re 18, what’s there to be excited about?

New cars are expensive.

I’m sure the convenience of rideshare services like Uber and Lyft is a factor in this. Being an Uber driver myself, this means more business for me. For example, there was a Paul McCartney concert in my hometown last night, and I’m cheaper than downtown parking for an event like that.

My 21 year old daughter still has not received her driver’s license.

Washington regulations have strangle the fun of driving and uber and lyft have made owning a vehicle to get around nearly obsolete.

Plus computer systems in car and “soy boys” have murdered the next generation of “backyard mechanics”

My nephew shrugs hes shoulders when I ask him if he’s excited to get his driver’s license.

Whatever happened to peak oil?

The article is BS.

Weak economies around the world are hurting demand.

China is the world’s largest car market and their stock market peaked in 2007.

I remember seeing footage during the 1990s of hordes of bicycles going around Beijing too.

The population isn’t shrinking so more cars will be needed.

I'm increasingly seeing this in the military. People are showing up to their commands fresh out of boot camp and A-school; 18, 19, 20 years old and have no driver license or even know how to drive. This is a problem because I need them to drive pickup trucks and duty vans in the performance of their jobs.

Around 2029-2030 people will call an Uber that has no driver. Autonomous cars will be the norm.

It’s great to show off you can afford a new car but cars last longer these days. You can own a good used car for a fraction of the cost.

Agreed. Here in Washington State you pay through the nose in RTA taxes for new vehicles...

I recently bought a like new Cadillac XTS platinum 2013 that had 40k miles on it for 25k, including a lifetime warranty.

Most new cars have been made boring by regulation and lack of imagination.
