Probably wasn’t flying the American flag either. Flying a flag of a foreign nation was a trick used to avoid interdiction. There were cases where the commander of a frigate patrolling off of the African coast would know a ship was transporting slaves but couldn’t say a ship was flying a foreign flag illegally.

A ship flying an American flag, an American ship in the proper sense, would be much easier to interdict. Especially as it neared our coast.
