Frank Zappa ... Dynamo Hummmm ...
I suppose “Teenage Kicks” by the Undertones doesn’t count?
Lightning Crashes by Live
Anything by Yes.
Blues begat Rock. The music discussed in this article is good (well most of it). But it does not fit the blues rock(or rockabilly) mold. Its pop with a bit of a rock beat.
I have no kick against modern jazz
Unless they try to play it too darn fast
And change the beauty of the melody
Until they sound just like a symphony
That’s why I go for that rock and roll music
Any old way you choose it
It’s got a back beat, you can’t lose it
Any old time you use it
It’s gotta be rock and roll music
If you want to dance with me
If you want to dance with me
Chuck Berry
Actually the very non-70s Symphonic Metal is more to my taste.
Lyrics are a waste of time.
Melody and musical skill are everything.
Combining a Metal band, a first class opera capable soprano and occasionally a full symphony backup, can make for some very impressive music.
Try Nightwish (with Tarja), Without Temptation or Epica and you will get the idea.
Bob Dylan, Slow train comming.
I’ve never done street drugs, but always favored acid rock.
Would Al Stewart’s Roads to Moscow and On the Border apply? Or is that more History Rock?
Who?
ELO
ELP
Supertramp
Yes
Peter Gabriel (within and without Genesis) always had thought-provoking material.
His third solo album (melt) is one of my faves.
Terrapin Station by Grateful Dead
The whole album is great IMHO, especially the title track. What other hand would use an oboe?
Oh, you must be referring to that genre of rock for silly girls...
Because real rock is a manly venture.
If intellectual music means mind engaging and rich, it’s hard to find any in rock aside from heavy metal. Moving outside the genre, intellectual music means Mozart and Wagner. Specifically, Mozart 40 and Wagner’s Ring series.
Genesis: The Fountain of Salmacis
King Crimson: Epitaph
Caravan: Nine Feet Underground
Camel: Lady Fantasy
Fruupp: Lord of the Incubus
Emerson, Lake & Palmer: Tarkus
Renaissance: Ashes Are Burning
Arabesque: Cobbler’s Knob
Fuchsia: Gone With The Mouse
...to name a few great prog bands.
Steely Dan can also be categorized as intellectual rock! From their "Can't Buy a Thrill" LP:
Kick butt guitar by Elliott Randall!
Iron maiden sings a lot of historical stuff.
My musical tastes cover a wide gamut and I can get into pretty much any kind of rock (or classical, country, jazz and blues for that matter). I'm still mining the decade of the 1970s however. I recently discovered the pre-Steve Perry Journey albums. Pretty good stuff despite the stupid album art.
