I’m a lot fonder of bats than most people are, but the huge, leathery wings on those flying foxes give me the heebie-jeebies.

Good afternoon.

Amazing, Trump is on the cover of “Harper’s Weekly.”

Who knew?

Before long he will be competing with a new novel by Charles Dickens. But we will have “Trumps” with us for quite a while.

[Continued from March 20 (reply #5.) ]

March 28. Have been rushing about town tonight, seeking affidavits to be used before the Senate Judiciary Committee, showing that “Trinity School” notoriously existed before it was incorporated, and in 1796, the date of Baker’s will. Hunted up old Samuel Gilford at last, whose ancient recollections serve my purpose. He remembers the Rev. Mr. Inglis, the last of the loyal rectors of Trinity Church, preaching his farewell sermon in St. George’s Chapel prior to his evacuation of the city along with the royal forces.

As the Kansas question was decided in favor of the Free State people, pro-slave towns like Lecompton did not thrive. Today, it's a small town near Lawrence that tries to snag tourists with a billboard promoting its Constitution Hall and Territorial Capital museum. Of course, unsuspecting tourists don't learn until they get into the museum that the constitution legalized slavery.

An amusing part of the complex is a building that is billed as the birthplace of the Kansas Democratic Party, which indeed it was - in the 1850's. It was the slaver's party.

Tomorrow’s post is related in that it involves a question of slavery in the neighboring state of Missouri, frequently a focal point in “Burning Kansas.” A key character in this Missouri matter will become, after a slow start, a major player in our history course.

Thanks, Homer. I did not know this about Grant. Says something very good about the man.
