You have to remember that this 11 year old thinking.

Maybe because of the position of his father’s head in bed he couldn’t see it.

Maybe the foot of the bed was closest to the door of the bed room and the only part of his father visible from the door was his father’s ass and the boy was afraid to enter the room.
