Heres an alarming but little-known figurestray cats and pet cats allowed outdoors kill 3.6 million birds every day on average in the United States, for a total of at least 1.3 billion birds per year. Thats most likely a sizable chunk out of the U.S. land-bird population, which the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center estimates is around 10-20 billion....[snip]
But some cat lovers are also bird lovers. Two of them, a birdwatcher named Nancy Brennan and a bird biologist named Susan Willson, have developed what they believe is a solution...

Our cats just LOVE Costco rotisserie chickens. ! And their roast turkeys too
The daughter’s cats have moved on. I plan on getting a kitten in a few years, and cats here live outside a lot. I do have a large bird feeding station, so I will definitely get the collar for the new cat.
Need outside cats to catch the mice before they come inside.
1.3 billion? Whatever....calling bs.
Our neighborhood needs more cars. The squirrel population is seriously out of control.
I never really gave it much thought.
Growing up decades ago, we had an orange tabby, kinda wirey in build, named Rusty.
Sweetest cat to humans. If you took your fingers, while standing straight up, and rubbed up and down on your chest, hed jump right up in your arms to be snuggled.
Squirrels, birds, mice, rabbits, snakes......hed take them all out. Very bad-ass hunter.
Apparently it isn’t a deterrent to killing small colorblind mammals.
Thank God... all rodents need to go to Rat-Heaven.
We had a wonderful hunting cat named Dominic. My wife made a wall chart tally sheet for voles, chipmunks, rabbits, birds, mice, etc. for our young children to learn about counting things. He probably didn’t share all his kills with us. Unfortunately, he met his demise early due to a sad adventure hunting a road vehicle.
Our next cat, Martin, was more circumspect. However, when we went away (neighbor girl fed him). We found two dead full sized rabbits in the basement that he defeated, dragged through the pet flap and left in the basement as trophies.
I was wading though a foot high sea of bird carcasses today, as I do everyday, and I too wondered about that 1.3 billion birds getting killed by cats
I have some sort of bobcat or in our yard that has slowly eaten its way through most of our burgeoning autumn squirrel population. All we have left is a couple of small reds. and I would be willing to pitch them TO the wild cat!
Memorably, last month it took out one fat grey squirrel slowly, first the tail...then...
Sounds like Tasha, my little calico, although she wasn't a hunter. I mostly kept her indoors as did her previous owner--this is coyote country. She passed away at 18 on Election Day, 2016.
Can these be put on Ocasio-Cortez, Tlaib and Omar so we can see those birdbrains coming?
Eww. Poor kitties! Those roissiere chickens are past due meat pumped full of nitrates to hide the foulness. Just sayin....
I have the rodent 5 gallon tightrope swimming pool that works well in the garage...but catching them before the enter is the cat’s job.
These work well:
