(CNN)Earlier this week, pro golfer Matt Kuchar defended the $5,000 he paid his fill-in caddie after winning $1,296,000 at the Mayakoba Classic in Mexico, his first PGA tournament victory in four years. But on Friday, Kuchar issued a statement saying he'll pay the rest of the $50,000 that caddie David Ortiz requested.

he gets off cheap...
Unfortunately (for him) he had to be dragged kicking and screaming to do the right thing.
Apparently Kuchar's regular caddy wasn't available so he had to rely on a local caddy for the tournament. After winning the tournament and the $1,296,000 prize money, he only gave his caddy $5,000 as opposed to the 10% normally given to his and the regular pro tour caddies........
Kuchar is going to have a long time living down this major faux pas on his part.
I agree, what the hell was he thinking? The guy is already a multi-millionaire and he just won another million and a quarter and stiffs the caddy?
This warrants a
carry your own damn bag
the next time he need a stand-in.

Good!
I hate cheap ba****** like this guy.
.
Cheap bastard...
50K he got off easy...
Kuchar’s a good guy. He’ll get needled about it forever, but it’s not going to hurt him.
I’ve read that he’s one of the best at verbal dueling with other players.
Kuch doesn’t have the game that he used to but he still always walks the course with a huge smile and seems like a good guy. This one set him back for sure.
I don’t think much of people who virtue signal like you.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong and make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking.
So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one---big hitter, the Lama---long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-galunga.
So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consiousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.
And he's also the 10th PGA player to win over $45 million in career earnings..........
And he has the guts to stiff a local caddy?
I have no respect for this guy........
I have no use for people who use new age terminology such as "virtue signaling"........Sounds too gay to me......
If the caddy wanted a pro deal he should have accepted nothing for not making the cut. As it was he got paid more than the initially agreed upon price.
If he was smart he would have leveraged Kuchars win into a job on the web.com tour but nah, he had to go all victim and got short money.
He will never carry a pro bag again.
Funny how some FReepers turn into Bernie Sanders and start acting holier than thou when rich people are involved.
You’re in no position to judge, as most of us aren’t. Apparently Kuchar had a verbal agreement and he paid according to that.
Sometimes players will still pay their regular caddie when they aren’t on the bag and maybe that’s why he agreed to pay the local caddie what he did. I don’t know if that was the case, and neither do you.
The local caddie did little more than carry Kuchar's bag. Kuchar had to do most of work that his regular caddie would do (yardage, club selection, reading greens, etc.) on his own. After Kuchar won the tournament he paid the caddie $5K which was more than the original agreement. It may have been a PR blunder, but he caddie should have been happy with the $5K for carrying a bag for the week. I guarantee if this caddy wasn't from Mexico is wouldn't be a big deal.
Sure he did, after his getting stiffed by Kuchar made the rounds in the PGA community........
As it stands now, by PGA pro caddy standards, he was still shorted over $75,000 based on the 10% winning standards that normally go to all the caddies.......
Now you can support Kuchar all you want by citing the flat fee he paid to the caddy but that's not going to erase the fact that he's a cheap son of a bitch by even considering NOT paying the guy the standard fee of the 10% bonus of the winnings that go to all the bag carriers.
