For women in particular, domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness. And the top causes of homelessness among families are: (1) lack of affordable housing, (2) unemployment, (3) poverty, and (4) low wages, in that order. And guess what states have the highest homeless? Hawaii and New York, have a higher per capita homeless rate than California's. Finally, records show California, indeed, has the highest total homeless population at over 150,000, far more than second place New York. Will the invading caravans from south of the border help relieve the homeless situation especially in California? And don't forget Los Angeles has declared it's now a sanctuary city.
Vanities.
The lack of a home?
Drugs, mostly. My experience with homeless people is that they are less interested in getting off the street than they are in getting off the drugs.
We should be prepared to institutionalize such people. We can design mental hospitals to give them a sense of having an apartment. It doesn’t need to be old-style of 4 white walls and a sparse bed.
I don’t buy it. I think mental illness is an overwhelming factor.
I think the main causes of being “homeless” are substance abuse and mental illness.
Trump’s fault?
The transient homeless, basically those who are homeless for a couple months at most are for the reasons stated. The chronic homeless are caused by drugs and mental illness.
Democrats?
I call BS on both sexes; it’s drugs and alcohol. Those are their priorities, not the normal responsibilities of society, like paying bills, having a steady income/home, etc.
Problem with that is that the people you have to hire to take care of them will abuse the **** out of them.
That's one reason the asylums got closed down in the first place.
lets not omit the mentally ill ...
two reasons, I don;’know the numbers, a choice to lead a listless life. Mental illness. people released from hospitals and prisons often have prescriptions. In the facilities someone watches them take their meds. On the street, not so much.
Cops or triage teams need to screen homeless. If they are listless throw the book at them every violation. If they are mentally ill, they need to have community facilities where they stay till they take meds. No living on the street. Illegal to sleep, crap, and camp on public or other’s property.
Mental illness is high on the list of problems.
And many of them WANT to live outside.
A lot of people are not aware that Gov. Reagan signed a bill letting mental patients out of asylums. Back in the 60s there were do-gooders who thought that locking people against their will was wrong.
For various reason, that is when the doors of mental institutions swung wide open.
The biggest reason why homeless prefer the street, to shelters, is because they might get raped in the shelters.
I know what you mean and we only need to take every reasonable step to prevent, but I think institutionalization is the best bet. From there, people can be streamed according to their ability to keep a roof over their heads and a job.
Why not?
Answer to headline title: Decades of Democrat Party’s agenda of totalitarian socialist policies, unchallenged and unconquered by cowardly elected and appointed political hacks in both Parties.
A general sense of entitlement is one factor. If I think the world owes me something, it does, a real hard smack down. Drugs are another big factor. I also think that the more advanced a society becomes, it leaves those with congenitally low IQs further and further behind.
Booze & drugs.
