Very likely another hoax. The attack may be real but it may well have been random, or else a gay hookup gone wrong.
Chances that it occurred as being described? Zero. It sounds like Antifa gayporn fantasy.
It has to be true. After all everyone knows that hate crime committing homophobes spread their hate in sub-freezing temperatures. (sarcasm added)

“MAGA Country” in Chicago? Please.
Well, this is #3 at least on this false news. At 0200 this morning the wind chill in chitcago was -6 deg. Yeah pop out for a Subway? Bf beat him up or a male escort.
With all of the video cameras out there, I would not be surprised if this is proven a hoax. Nothing will be done if it is and the media will bury the story.
Let’s break this down shall we?
1. Two men, wearing ski masks at 0200 in Chigago, recognize a man who plays a bit character on a TV show and beat him down. They called out, “Hey, aren’t you that fa**ot ni**er from Empire?” After they beat him, they tie a noose around his neck and pour bleach on him while screaming, “This is MAGA country.”

- its Chicago and its wintertime. This is not only possible, but its probable as well.
... recognized a man who plays a character on TV.
- well, this is also possible and probable, but only if at least one the masked men were avid watchers of the show. As I understand it, this character is not a main character, so only someone very familiar with the program would recognize him and only if his face was not covered by any sort of hat and/or scarf combo.
... and beat him down.
- he did go to the hospital, so records should prove out cuts, bruises and the smell of bleach.
... after they beat him they tied a noose/rope (depends on which article you read) around his neck and poured bleach on him.
- this is where it gets murky. Two guys wearing ski masks in Chicago at 0200 is possible and probable, but two guys wearing ski masks in Chicago at 0200 while carrying a rope made into a noose and bleach, while possible, is NOT probable unless this crime was premeditated and at least one of the two men KNEW Mr Smollet was going to be in that exact area at the exact same time. There was a letter sent to Mr. Smollett 8 days ago where the word MAGA can be seen. The letter appears to have been written by a small child, and it does threaten Mr Smollett with bodily harm, so now we have to go to premeditation.
- I only have to assume the noose/rope was left around Mr Smollett’s neck (what good would it do to put it on him, only to remove it) and his clothes were ruined by the bleach. There are no notes stating the whereabouts of the rope/noose or his bleach soaked clothes.

- No. Chicago is NOT MAGA country.
So, there are three possibilities here in my opinion (feel free to add or subtract):
1. This is complete hoax. From the letter to the noose to the bleach to the hateful words. All concocted to make MAGA supporters look bad.
2. Mr Smollett was beat down, but the letter is completely unrelated to it. Mr Smollett added the rope/noose, hateful words and poured bleach on himself to get some publicity and possibly further his own agenda knowing the letter was already being investigated.
3. This was a premeditated hate crime perpatrated by MAGA supporters.
Lots of questions would be cleared up if there were a video and his clothes and the rope/noose were collected as evidence.
Smells like the trout my buddy left in the cooler in the back of his Blazer for a week last summer.
