My nephew worked at a Dicks Sporting Goods. They told their staff they were in NO WAY allowed to approach or interfere with shoplifters. Identify the perp, stand back, and call the security or mall police.

He said that if the local feral youth were at all organized or intelligent, they could clean out a Dicks in 3 minutes

A buddy of mine manages a TJ Maxx. Not only are they told to not pursue or stop shoplifters, they have a company policy of not allowing employees to exit the store within 5 minutes of the shoplifters exiting the store.

My friend almost got fired for going out to get something out of his car 3 minutes after the perps left.

I would like to encourage feral youths to clean out Dicks. They deserve what they get for many reasons.

Not new. In 1966 I worked for a now defunct retailer in metropolitan DC, Woodward & Lothrops. In employee training it was emphasized that if shop lifting was spotted not to confront the thief but call the front office or if one of the store detectives (who were all moonlighting cops in plain clothes) were in sight motion him over. The employees were generally alert. One day a group of the youts from a nearby public housing development showed up and were obviously trying to distract me by asking lots of questions about various items while several moor were drifting towards the clothing racks. The store manager who had played football in HS and college, suddenly appeared and told me ‘go ask those gentlemen in men's suits if you can assist them while I help these people. The youts quickly lost interest and departed. The one big no no was confronting a shop lifter directly. The store attitude was no employee's life was worth anything that might be stolen.
