The child is 3, and was likely suffering (at least borderline) hypothermia. Maybe a bear really was with him. Maybe he just dreamt or imagined it. The great news is that he was found, and will be fine.

I agree...it's fishy.
Have the kid draw a picture of the bear.
I think he was kidnapped and the kidnapper got spooked when he heard voices of rescuers.

It is absolutely true! It happened less than 50 miles from where I live in Jacksonville, North Carolina. The whole state is rejoicing that he is okay, since the day he disappeared and the day after were bitterly cold and the day that he was found started out with torrential downpours. That he came through with only a few scratches is a miracle! Many of us here in Eastern North Carolina believe that the prayers that were offered up around the clock until he was found had a lot to do with the outcome!
