Microsoft Office lands on the Mac App Store (i.e. get MS-Office the way Apple intended)

Now you can download Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and OneDrive from Apple. No Clippy though.

The next time you open up a new Apple computer, go to the App Store to start downloading apps, and type in "Microsoft Office," you'll actually get something.

Until now, anyone who wanted to use Microsoft Office and its popular Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote apps had to do so by going to Microsoft's website and downloading it all from there. Now, they're available on the Mac App Store as well, making it even easier for people to download and use.

"We love the idea of the App Store being the specific place for Mac apps," Jared Spataro, the corporate vice president of Microsoft 365, said in an interview.27-apple-macbook-air-2018

CNET's Dan Ackerman probably can't wait to download Microsoft Office as soon as he reads this. Sarah Tew/CNET

The move is the latest example of Microsoft expanding beyond its once-obsession with Windows, its monopoly-making software that powers nine out of 10 PCs on the planet. Over the past five years since Satya Nadella was named its new CEO, the company has increasingly become more friendly with its rivals. That includes Microsoft releasing a version of Microsoft Office for iPhones and iPads, and bringing more apps like the Visual Studio coding tools to the Mac.

With Office for Mac, Microsoft is doing more than merely bringing its popular apps to the Mac App Store. The Mac App Store will also update the downloaded apps automatically, and you'll be able to buy a subscription to the Office software using your Apple ID and Mac App Store account instead of paying Microsoft directly, if you prefer. (Existing Office for Mac users can merely download the software and log in to their Office accounts to use them).

Apple Mac users have been able to download and run a version of Microsoft Office for Mac, but until now you had to visit and negotiate Microsoft's site to do it, which is not the way it's supposed to be (according to Apple). So now it's available from the Mac App Store and all is well with the world.

Wait... what?? No Clippy?!?

So I just now downloaded MS Word from the Mac App Store. It was free! FREE??

It took an ungodly amount of time, and when it was done the installed application was... 2.24GB. So, okay, it MUST be a stand-alone copy of MS-Word. Woo-hoo!.... They probably charge me for the license when I start it up. Okay.

But when I launched it, I learned that it is "READ-ONLY" until you sign up for an Office 365 subscription. So much for the idea that it's a stand-alone copy of MS-Word (which I'd be entirely willing to pay for!).

What the hell takes 2.24GB for something that runs out of the cloud??

*SIGH*

I should have known. Well, okay, I don't want Office 365, so I've got a 2.24GB Word Reader.

Back to LibreOffice.

Google docs and other freeware word processing apps are fine for creating new documents, but if you have decades’ worth of old Word .doc & .docx files for your work, the free stuff doesn’t really do the job all that well. The fonts are different, the formatting can be off... spacing, tabs, you name it. Sure, if you want to spent 10-15 minutes you can probably whipping your old document back into share with the free stuff. But if you just want to open the document and move on, Word is usually the most efficient way to go, so you bite the bullet and make Bill Gates a little bit richer.

I have it on my Macs. And don't mind using iCloud with it. Seamless using Excel and Word on different Macs, picking up with editing on documents in iCloud right where I left off on a different Mac. I don't trust Google at all, never use it. As for documents in the cloud, I regularly back up to local backups on my home network.

All of my customers use MS Office. I’d be cutting my own throat if I tried to do without it. I have to have the track changes functions, plus upload and download docs from a secure server.

Because of work requirements, many of us are under an obligation to keep what we do on hardware that we control. Also we work with other people who work with MS Word so have to be compatible.

LibreOffice hasn’t been ported yet to iOS/Android.

So on those mobile systems its either Microsoft Office or nothing.

Yep, it doesn’t add up at all. Annnnd this is why I’m done with MS. They just keep bloating stuff up. Every time I upgraded my hardware MS came along and stole all the new room and speed resources I had just acquired.

My wife’s Win 10 is slower than my old 286 with DOS was.

Given the ridiculous bloated size, the requirement of the Office 365 subscription, and the realization after I launched it that the interface is the Win8 Metro crapola and can't be changed, I decided the hell with it.

Dang. I've used Word for two and a half decades (ever since Windows 3.11), but it's dead to me now. My old copy of Word 2007 still works... and if I'm feeling especially cranky, I still have 2003 (with the patch for .docx) around somewhere. :-)

I miss Clippy and all those animated companions. They made it feel a bit less lonely while working on a paper due the next day.

Remember the Wizard one? He was my favorite. I think he was only part of Windows2000 packages though I never saw him after that.
