Replacing the handle in the "To:" block with your own name means that the poster you are responding to does not get a ping. It's like answering to someone behind their back so they are less likely to see the response and reply.
I do it to place a bookmark without annoying the person who made the post I am marking for reference. In E54's case, I think it's just ego.
