I have been in Texas since 1975 and I spend time camping and on trails. I have only seen one live rat snake and three dead rattlesnakes.

And two of the rattlesnakes were seen squished on the side of the road.

Jus sayin.

You weren’t looking.

I can’t tell you how many I’ve seen in my lifetime. I make an effort to squish every one I see on the road. I nearly stepped on one going to get the mail a day before Christmas. We had one in the toilet. One wrapped itself around my legs. I beat one to a greasy spot in the middle of the living room carpet with granny cast iron skillet (first thought was to shoot but not in the living room).
Mr. b shot one on the porch. The neighbor had one on her fireplace mantle. A rattler came this close to biting me while I was sitting on the porch. Mr. b’s dad shot one one the porch that was this close to biting Mr. b asleep on the porch swing. A neighbor killed a rattler that was in the process of birthing a dozen baby rattlers. A copperhead was in the guest room a couple months ago. A cottonmouth bit Mr. b’s foot. Then there’s the water moccasins entangling themselves making whoopie by the shore and you can’t go swimming without them sticking their heads up looking at you. Etc., etc.

Even with all those, I didn’t think we had many snakes until the kitties. They bring in 1-3 nearly every day, “Look, Ma, we brought you a present!” We always have gloves handy to dispose of the small snakes quickly.
