Rogelio V. Solis Facebook Twitter SMS Email Save Former University of Mississippi coach Hugh Freeze was introduced as Liberty’s ninth head football coach Friday afternoon.

The hiring comes four days after Turner Gill abruptly retired Monday, less than 48 hours after Liberty completed its inaugural Football Bowl Subdivision season last weekend. The Flames went 6-6 thanks to back-to-back home victories over New Mexico State and Norfolk State.

“It’s just an unbelievable day,” Freeze said. " ... I can't wait to get started."

Freeze’s hiring was a big win for Liberty. He was linked to offensive coordinator positions at Power 5 conference programs Tennessee, Auburn and Florida State in the past week.

Freeze said he spent three straight days earlier in the week visiting other universities for a role as offensive coordinator. He met with Liberty officials Wednesday afternoon and agreed to a contract Friday morning.

“He’s going to bring a dynamic brand of football to Liberty,” Flames athletic director Ian McCaw said.

Freeze, who hasn’t coached since the 2016-17 season, arrives at Liberty with a college coaching record of 69-32.

He steered Ole Miss to a 39-25 mark with four bowl appearances during his five seasons there.

Freeze, 49, was set to be the offensive coordinator of the Arizona Hotshots in The Alliance of American Football before taking the head coaching position at Liberty.

“Hugh Freeze is an asset to our university in so many ways,” Liberty President Jerry Falwell Jr. said.

He returns to the college coaching ranks after two seasons away following an unceremonious departure from Ole Miss.

Freeze resigned in the summer of 2017 after school officials discovered he used his university-issued cell phone to call numbers associated with escort services. Earlier in the year, the school issued a self-imposed one-year bowl ban for the 2017 season after receiving an NCAA notice of allegations that accused the Rebels of a lack of institutional control and Freeze for failing to monitor his coaching staff.

Freeze’s first public appearance following his resignation came at Liberty in late January of this year when he and his wife, Jill, appeared at one of the thrice-weekly convocation services. Freeze used the platform to speak about his faith and publicly apologize for his indiscretions.

Freeze’s college head coaching career began at Lambuth, an NAIA program, where he compiled a 20-5 record in two seasons.

He guided Arkansas State to a 10-2 mark and a berth in the GoDaddy.com Bowl in 2011, which led to his hiring at Ole Miss.

The hiring of a coach at a minor D1 college football program is not newsworthy in itself. What is of interest is the question on why would a university that supposedly promotes Christian values hire a coach who has moral baggage?

Saul had “moral baggage” and the Lord turned him into the Apostle Paul.

You might want to hear from Freeze himself, start at 11 mins in:

Freeze has some baggage. Hope he's learned from his mistakes. As far as Xs and Os though, he is a great coach.

Hugh Freeze is his real name?
It sounds like a Lego character.
Well anyway, good luck to team Liberty!

As to your question on why hire someone with Moral Baggage.
Perhaps his was the least flawed resume of them all.
Most of us have done something we’re not proud of during the process of growing up and making your way through life.
Perhaps some Sins are less egregious than others, when all options are considered.

I’m a big fan of Freeze for finally turning Ole Miss around (and beating Alabama!), I just wish he wasn’t a slime ball.

Why did Turner Gill retire? Hope it’s not health issues.

Hugh Freeze is a sociopath. He uses Christianity to make himself look good.

I don't call him a hypocrite, because in God's eyes we're ALL hypocrites, in that we all fall short of what we should be.

Hugh freeze is an out-and-out liar and fraud. When the news of Ole Miss cheating first came out, Freeze blamed it on the previous administration, ie, Houston Nutt. Nutt, naturally incensed him and he hired Tom Marrs to sue Ole Miss for slander.

When the news came out that the Ole Miss cheating was under Hugh Freeze's watch, he played the poor persecuted CHristian card. Then, it came out that Hugh Freeze was using his Ole Miss University telephone to call hookers in Tampa. He claimed it was for himself- more than likely, it was for some of the recruits in that area that later signed with Ole Miss. Hugh didn't need hookers in Tampa- he was getting plenty on the side right there in Oxford.

I'm wondering how long before Hugh violates the "Not alone in a room with a woman not your wife" rule?

His wife supposedly has a heart condition and he is stepping down to focus on her health issues. Mine and my friends opinion is that he will likely come back to Nebraska in an administrative role with the football program or perhaps a fundraiser. His wife Gail (who I know from UNL). Is from Kearney. Turner Gill is a revered Husker legend and was Scott Frost’s position coach when he played. Frost has already brought back Ron Brown (another former coach from his playing days) so bringing back Turner Gill would not be a surprise. He likes to have guys around who were here when things were rolling and who know the “Husker Way”.

“Hugh Freeze is a sociopath. He uses Christianity to make himself look good.”

All true.

I’m from Mississippi, one of my relatives is a big time Ole Miss Alumni supporter and he was on the Hugh Freeze phone tree. That’s where Freeze would send out a bible verse/inspirational quote of the day every morning to those booster club members that donated enough money. I presume it was from the same phone the Freeze was using to set up his hookers and arrange lunchtime dates with his multiple mistresses around Oxford.

He’s stupid too, he screwed up a $5 million a year job because he was too dumb to buy a throwaway phone at wal-mart, he used his school provided phone to contact his hookers and mistresses. That’s how he got caught, somebody started questioning all the strange numbers on his phone bill. Being that dumb should be grounds for dismissal anyway.

Liberty must be in bad shape to get in bed with this scumbag. God may forgive but that doesn’t mean you’ve got to trust someone like Freeze.
